These sample advertising cards were found in the scrapbook collection of Lou Mericle. As recounted by Carol Brotzman, who contributed these photographs in September 2006:
The source is three scrapbooks compiled originally by Lucia "Lou" Louise Hyde Mericle (August 23, 1865-April 1, 1935). She was an Auburn Township, Susquehanna County, PA resident. She was married to Andrew Lowe Mericle on February 22, 1886 by the Reverend G. C. Jacobs at the Rush Parsonage. (Source: Beaver Meadows/Rush Church records).
They were in turn passed to her daughter, Madge Agnes Mericle Balliet (October 14, 1892 - February 4, 1985), the wife of Fred Balliet. The books were then passed to their daughter Ruth Balliet Hollister (July 12, 1912 - October 1985). She was the wife of Kenneth Fancher Hollister who left them in his attic. That is where his son, Burton Hollister and wife Rose Oakes Hollister, finally found them amid the dust. You can see the ancestral lineage of Burton Hollister at the end of this page.
Burton Hollister has loaned the books to me to share with the public now.
We are most grateful to Burton, Rose and Carol, and to Burton's ancestors, for this snapshot of commercial history over 100 years ago.
