Editor's Note: We are grateful to Lyle Rockwell for providing this history, that otherwise would have passed away with Robert Pond, his primary living source. Of course, we cannot say too much in appreciation to Mr. Pond as well, for sharing his insights and recollections. Please note that this history cuts off where living individuals appear who might not want their personal information posted online. Should anyone want to waive this consideration, please inform Lyle at the contact e-mail above and he will advise us how to proceed. You can also forward any corrections, additions or questions to Lyle who, in turn, will inform us of any required changes.

The Pond's first came to America with the fleet of Governor Winthrop in the 1630's. The Pond's were related to Governor Winthrop by marriage.

Two sons of Phineas & Rhoda Wood Pond of Smithville, Chenango Co., NY came to the same general area of Wilmot Township and Colley Township. Alvah, 6th son of Phineas, and Orel, 1st son of Phineas settled in Wilmot near the Colley Township of Sullivan County. Both families were enumerated in the 1850 census of Wilmot Township. Orel Pond’s tombstone is found in the Colley Cemetery, Sullivan Co., PA, however Alvah’s tombstone has not been found, but a newspaper clipping written by Rev. J. Merring, Terrytown, Pa., dated  February 2, 1877 states he died at his home in Wilmot January 21, 1877.

The 2nd daughter of Phineas & Rhoda Pond named Malinda Pond Moffatt & her husband Arthur Moffat also settled in Colley Township and are buried in the Colley Cemetery.

In 1849, two brohers, Hiram & Chancy Pond setled in Bradford County area known as Shingle Ridge. By clearing all the trees and roots from the land, they created a farm out of the wilderness. They used the logs to build a log-cabin home and made rough lumber to build the barn with.

Chancy left with the Indians and later became a major in the Army. He was mentioned in one of Mark Twain's books. Being spirited and one for parties, he danced to the tune "Yankee Doodle"

Cyrus H. and Rhoda (Raymond) Earsley ... natives respectively of Pennsylvania and New York State, came west to Minnesota about 1861, and purchased 160 acres of land in Utica Township, which was wild and heavily timbered. By long and untiring effort, interrupted only by a period of service in the Civil War, Cyrus H. Earsley cut and grubbed out the timber and developed the land, also erecting a residence and outbuildings. There he followed general agriculture until 1890, when he retired to the Village of Utica, where he and his wife are still living, he being occupied in driving one of the rural mail routes out of that village. They were the parents of six children: Wallace, now deceased; Delbert E., of Elgin; Flora, residing at home with her parents; Frank, a farmer of Fremont, Minn.; Anna, deceased; Edward, now living in Winona; and James, residing in North Dakota ..." Hiram came to Wilmot Township, Bradford Co., PA about 1849 from Smithville, Chenango Co., NY and settled in an area known as Shingle Ridge near the Sullivan County line. Hiram and his family cleared a farm out of the wilderness, and used the timbers to build a log cabin home and used the rough cut lumber to build the barn. Hiram taught school at Saxer HIll school, and farmed. They raised sheep for the wool to be spun into yarn. Then Hannah would weave it on a loom into cloth to make clothes.
