Historian's Note: On May 30, 1919, parades were held in Dushore and Mildred to honor soldiers returned from World War One as well as those who never returned. This holiday fell almost exactly six months after Armistice Day, November 11, 1918, when the guns fell silent on the Western Front where nearly all American forces were fighting, and on all the other fronts as well. The American intervention in 1917 had proven decisive in forcing Germany to surrender. After the submarine attack on the Lusitania in 1917 and the Zimmerman telegram inviting Mexico to ally with Germany, thousands of Americans rallied to the flag. For many, in what was still a heavily agrarian society, the training camps, transport ships, European cities and battle fronts were their first exposure to anything more than fifty miles from home. America would never be the same. Here, Jim Yonkin has collected six images from eBay. These photos show the public enthusiasm, if not for the war itself, at least for the men who went and fought it.
The three Dushore photos display a staging area before the parade. We aren't exactly sure where this scene is located but there is a large sign advertising Selz shoes on a building in the right background of the photo. These were considered good quality shoes and sold for anywhere from $3.50 to $5.00. The other two photos show the parade in progress through the main streets of Dushore. The three photos from Mildred show an empty street bedecked with a wreath labeled "Argonne Forest", the scene of a bloody and decisive engagement by the American Expeditionary Force in the last year of the war. Another photo shows soldiers, women and other citizens parading Americna flags into town before or during the parade. Finally, there is a moving scene taken at a local cemetery, where the gathered attendees clearly are honoring the fallen soldiers who did not return to Mildred from the war.

Jim Yonkin also sent us three photos from an undated Memorial Day event in Dushore. He believes they may be from the occasion when the War Monument itself waa dedicated, perhaps 1930. These photos came from
his father's estate. His grandfather Carl Yonkin is referenced in the handwritten notes on the back of one photo. These notes were written by Ada (Henshaw) Yonkin (1883-1976),
Jim's great grandmother. If anyone can more closely date this event, please advise.
