The Descendants of Anton Baumgartner

The material and pictures in this summary was organized and contributed by the Reverend James J. Ruddick, SJ, who was retired from the faculty at Canisius College in Buffalo, NY. Father Ruddick was related to the Litzelman, Sick, Sweeney and Kelly families of Sullivan County tradition. He died on March 18, 2007. The Sullivan County Settlers Web Page is grateful to Father Ruddick for the contribution of this historical information.The reader may find it interesting to compare what Father Ruddick discovered with the information in Settlers Page XIX on this page. The Baumgartner Emigration overlaps the story told here, and tells in more detail about many of the Baumgartner families in Sullivan and Lycoming Counties, and in Iowa where several emigrated after the Civil War. Father Ruddick's story also helps clarify some of the ambiguity surrounding the two "Cook" families of Sullivan County. Those Cooks who married with the Baumgardners now appear to have born the surname "Koch" in Germany, whereas the other Cook family, descended via Henry Cook, was of Irish origin.

Anton BAUMGARTNER was born in 1727. He died on Mar 22, 1788.

Anton BAUMGARTNER and Maria BERNBACH were married. Anton BAUMGARTNER and Maria BERNBACH had the following children:

I. Wendelin BAUMGARTNER was born on Oct 25, 1761 in Ober-Eichsel, Germany. He died in 1832.

Wendelin BAUMGARTNER and Magdalena BRUGGER were married on Feb 4, 1788. Magdalena BRUGGER (daughter of Nicolaus BRUGGER and Anna Maria) was born on Aug 3, 1765 in Neider-Eichsel, Baden. She died on Jan 7, 1818 in Neider-Eichsel, Baden. Wendelin BAUMGARTNER and Magdalena BRUGGER had the following children:

A. Joseph BAUMGARTNER was born on May 19, 1799 in Neider-Eichsel, Baden. He died on Feb 16, 1851.

Joseph BAUMGARTNER and Maria Ursula KANI were married on Apr 17, 1820. Maria Ursula KANI (daughter of Anton KANI and Ursula WEBER) was born on Oct 4, 1799 in Adelhausen Germany. She died after 1870 in Cherry Township, PA. Note: The name Kani is also spelled Kahni and Kany. You can read more about the Kahni emigration and history in Sullivan County at Faces and Families of Old Sullivan County, Group Two. Just scroll down to the part entitled The Three Kahni Brothers. Joseph BAUMGARTNER and Maria Ursula KANI had the following children:

1. Ignatz (George) BAUMGARTNER was born on Jul 26, 1821 in Eichsel, Germany. He died on May 3, 1863 in Chancellorsville. George (as he was known in America) fought in the Civil War. He was killed at the battle of Chancellorsville. He was shot in the head in the morning of May 3rd, -- as his regiment withdrew from Hazel Grove. He was officially listed as missing, and never having been heard from again, he almost certainly died where (perhaps as) he fell.

Ignatz (George) BAUMGARTNER and Susannah LITZELSWOPE were married. Susannah LITZELSWOPE (daughter of Joseph LITZELSWOPE) was born on Sep 30, 1822. She died on Dec 29, 1905. Ignatz (George) BAUMGARTNER and Susannah LITZELSWOPE had the following children:

2. Mechtunde (Matilda) BAUMGARTNER was born on Apr 12, 1822. She died in 1900. Note that Conrad and Mechtunde Baumgartner Cook had two infants that died young.

Note also that the birth date for Mechtunde Baumgartner is given as 12/4/1822 by Marie Baumgartner-Brasington.

Mechtunde (Matilda) BAUMGARTNER and Conrad COOK (KOCH) were married. Conrad COOK (KOCH) was born in 1817. He died in 1902. Conrad and Mechtunde had two infants who died young. Mechtunde (Matilda) BAUMGARTNER and Conrad COOK (KOCH) had the following children:

a. William L. COOK (KOCH) was born on Oct 9, 1847. He died on Jan 4, 1921.

b. Maria COOK (KOCH) was born in 1850.

e. Joseph C. COOK was born in 1852 in Cherry Mills, PA. He died on Jul 22, 1893. Another source gives the year of death as 1883. However, Mary Lynch Litzelman recalls that her grandfather died at about 40 years of age, hence presumably 1893. Joseph Cook was a skilled wagon maker

Joseph C. COOK and Hannah SICK were married on Sep 15, 1873 in Dushore, PA. Hannah SICK (daughter of Francis Charles (called Franz) SICK and Hannah ("Johanna") REINFRIED) was born on May 10, 1853. She died on Mar 14, 1924. Joseph C. COOK and Hannah SICK had the following children:

i. R(oseanna) Jane (Jennie) COOK was born on Aug 22, 1876. She died in Jan 1969. R. Jennie Cook Holcombe was a very fine seamstress. She made most of her children's clothes. She was also a great baker - bread, pancakes, crullers, fritters, cakes.

R(oseanna) Jane (Jennie) COOK and Vell Burr HOLCOMBE were married on Nov 29, 1900 in Dushore, PA. Vell Burr HOLCOMBE (son of Pierson A. HOLCOMBE and Sophia Elizabeth MOTT) was born on Mar 16, 1871 in Leroy, Bradford Co., PA. He died in May 1952. R(oseanna) Jane (Jennie) COOK and Vell Burr HOLCOMBE had the following children:

(1) Pauline Cook HOLCOMBE was born on Jun 1, 1903 in Dushore, PA. She died on Aug 18, 1992 in Dushore, PA. Pauline Cook Holcombe was very active in the Sullivan Co. Historical Society and Museum. (2) Alice Elizabeth HOLCOMBE was born on Apr 13, 1905 in Dushore, PA. She died on Feb 22, 1955.

Alice Elizabeth HOLCOMBE and Jeremiah Joseph (Jerry) MCCARTHY were married on Jul 21, 1928. Jeremiah Joseph (Jerry) MCCARTHY was born on Oct 31, 1893. He died on Dec 17, 1943. Alice Elizabeth HOLCOMBE and Jeremiah Joseph (Jerry) MCCARTHY had the following children:

Birthplace of Mathias (Matt) Litzelman is given as Hirsingen, Upper Alsace, France. The town is also known as Hirsingue. (On the map, near Basel) Apparently, the town was known by slightly different names when under French and under German control. Barbara BAUMGARTNER and Mathias (Matt) LITZELMAN had the following children:

a. Anna KAHNI was born about 1856. Anthony Kaney commented on the birth dates of the children of Michael and Karoline: "I deduced the birth years for the children from their ages given in the federal census records. Although these were consistent over several decades, as you know the ages in census records can sometimes be off by a year or two."

b. Emma (or Emily) KAHNI was born in 1858.

c. Mary KAHNI was born in 1860.

d. George KAHNI was born in 1862. He died on Mar 29, 1950.

9. Mary Ann BAUMGARTNER was born in 1835 in Cherry Township, PA. She died in 1920.

Mary Ann BAUMGARTNER and Chester C. SMITH were married. Chester C. SMITH (son of Alanson SMITH and Lydia KENNEDY) was born in 1829 in Canton. He died in 1903. Mary Ann BAUMGARTNER and Chester C. SMITH had the following children:

10. Daniel BAUMGARTNER was born in 1838 in Cherry Township, PA. He died on Jul 12, 1863 in Battle of Gettysburg. Daniel was killed at the battle of Gettysburg. Based on his Military Service Record in the National Archives, Daniel was wounded on July 2, 1863. He lingered until July 12, when he died at the Field Hospital, Gettysburg. 11. Anthony W. BAUMGARTNER was born on Jun 9, 1839. He died in 1930 in Beech Grove, Lycoming Co., PA. Anthony was a sergeant in the 58th Regt, Co. B in the Civil War. He survived the war.

Anthony W. BAUMGARTNER and Cecilia GOULD were married. Cecilia GOULD Cecilia Gould was the widow of Herbert Brewer. They had a son, Herbert Brewer, Jr. Anthony W. BAUMGARTNER and Cecilia GOULD had the following children:
