The Sullivan Review

A Revolutionary Pensioner Passes Away- A Former Resident of Dushore, Mrs. M.M. Dickey, widow of the late James Dickey, died at her home in Towanda, on Monday of last week, in the 78th year of her age.

Mrs. Dickey was a pensioner of the Revolutionary war. She was born in Switzerland and came to America in early life with her father John Mosier, who settled where the town of Dushore is now located, when this was an unbroken wilderness with the exception of a little clearing by the refugee Frenchman, Du Peiti Thiers, after whom the town was eventually named.

When a young girl, she married James Dickey, a soldier of the Revolutionary war, who died in Towanda in 1844, aged 96 years. Mrs. Dickey had therefore been his widow for 43 years.
.
Two brothers who are well known in our county, Peter Mosier, of Dushore and Christian Mosier of Colley, and a sister, Mrs. C. Hoffman, of this place, survive her.

The Reporter Journal, in speaking of Mrs. Dickey says: "Mrs. Dickey was an estimable Christian woman and had the great respect of all who knew her. She passes away at an advanced age leaving the memory of a well-spent life, that which there is no better heritage".

Child of MARY MOSIER and JAMES DICKEY is:

i. ELIZABETH MOSIER.

A sad accident occurred at Colley last Sunday afternoon, October 17, by which Mrs. Christian Mosier lost her life. H.D. Mosier with his wife, their two daughters and his mother was driving down the Landback hill in Colley when t he wagon tongue broke near the neck yoke and plowed into the ground, upsetting the wagon and throwing the occupants out.
Mrs. Christian Mosier received two cuts about the head. Her skull was fractured and she lived only about one hour and a half. Mrs. H.D. Mosier was considerably bruised; the others escaped without injury.
Mrs. Christian Mosier, nee Catherine Yonkin, was born in Berks County, PA, Sept 11, 1816, and was therefore in the eighty-second year of her age. She came to this county (the Lycoming) with her parents while yet in her girlhood and was married to Christian Mosier in 1836. She became the mother of nine children, seven sons and two daughters. Her husband died about two years ago.
The remains were interred in the Colley cemetery Wednesday.

PATRICK FARRELL AND DESCENDANTS

This history was compiled by Dorothy Farrell Webster of Bradford, PA. Dorothy is the daughter of Herschel E. Farrell and Florence Denson VanGorder. Herschel was a policeman in Corning, NY, where Dorothy was born. Herschel was the son of Francis Farrell and Catherine Norton, and the grandson of Patrick Farrell, the immigrant, and Bridget Kinsley, both of County Longford, Ireland. There are seveal Farrell families in the history of Sullivan County, so it is important to keep them distinctly in mind. This Farrell family came to North America in 1834, first landing in Quebec, and then entered the United States and arrived in Sullivan County in 1840. The family engaged in farming there and several of the children became successful memebers of the Catholic community in that area. Both Patrick and Bridget are buried at St. Basil's Cemetery in Dushore.

We are indebted to Dorothy for this family history and thank her for her ongoing effort. She can be reached for discussion at id10t@pennswoods.net .

PATRICK FARRELL was born in 1798 in County Longford, Ireland and died 4/28/1864, in Cherry Township, Sullivan County, PA. He married Bridget Kinsley of Ireland, born about 1807 and died 3/3/1881, in Cherry Township, Sullivan County, PA. They are both buried in St. Basil Cemetery, DuShore, PA

James, age 22 a farmhand
FRANCIS, age 19 a shoemaker
Andrew, age 18, a blacksmith apprentice

Fact #6 - On Patricks death, a younger son, Thomas Farrell, petitioned the court to allow a bid on the estate of his father, Patrick Farrell, who had died intestate. 116 acres of land were available and were appraised as worth $2,471.67. On 12/19/1866, two other brothers of Thomas, John H. and James K. Farrell, bid on the estate and won it. Hutchinson * Soda Bottle Engraved with "F. H. Farrell"
Dushore Bottling Works
Owned by Frank H. Farrell
Before 1922
Photo contributed by Scott W. Tilden
Original auctioned on eBay in December 2012

* Editor's Note: Hutchinson bottles, commonly called "Hutches", were are a unique type of antique bottle that had a wire stopper inside the neck of the bottle. The bottles were designed to be cleaned and re-used by the bottler. The bottle was first introduced in 1879. However, widespread use did not occur until into the 1880s. The bottle then had nationwide acceptance until the 1910-1920 era. Then, automatic bottle making machines appeared and crown-topped bottles replaced Hutches. Hutchinson bottles were originally shipped in crates upside-down. These crates had odd sized holes in them. As a result, many bottles, like this one, have the bottler's initials embossed on them. They would be easier to identify in the crate without having to remove every bottle. The bottles were hand-blown by glassblowers.

"The Sullivan Review (3/12/1896) - Headlines Read"

"Death of A.E. Farrell" (son of Patrick and Bridget Kinsley Farrell)

The article goes on to say:

This community was startled and inexpressibly grieved last Thursday morning to learn of the sudden death at about two o'clock that morning of Ambrose E. Farrell of Lopez. He was one of the proprietors of the Hotel Lopez at that place, and retired at about ten o'clock in his usual state of health. He awakened his wife about two o'clock complaining of an alarming pain in his heart. Rev. Father Enright slept in the hotel and she went to summon him, but before the priest could reach his bedside he was dead. The funeral was held Saturday, March 14, Mass being said in the chapel at Lopez and the body brought to DuShore on the 9:13 a.m. train and interred in St. Basil Cemetery, hundreds of sorrowing relatives and friends following the casket that contained all that was mortal of warm hearted, generous and true Ambrose E. Farrell.

Ambrose Edward Farrell was born in Cherry Township, this county, September 1 1848 and at the time of his death March 12, 1896, was consequently 47 years, 6 months and 11 days old. His early life was spent as a farmers' boy, and he drifted from that occupation to mining. The years of 1872, '73 and '74, he spent in the vicinty of Houtzdale, following the occupation of a coal miner. He was first married in May 1880 to Mary Bergan.

The union was a particulary happy one, but was cut short by the death of the wife in March of the following year, leaving a girl baby to inherit the wealth of affection lavished on the mother. This child was ever his tenderest care and and as she grew in years and beauty, all that money could buy or love suggest, was hers at the slightest wish.

He gave up the occupation of miner at Bernice, PA in 1885 and opened a livery stable in DuShore, PA, changing his business a year later to that of running the Exchange Hotel. Always prudent and a close financier he succeeded in making and saving money and in 1889, in partnership with Jerry Deegan, he purchased the Hotel Lopez, at the then newly founded and rapidly growing town. This hotel was a veritable gold mine for a number of years, and at his death Mr. Farrell, while not positively wealthy as counted nowadays, could count his dollars by the thousands, and his wife and children are left in very comfortable circumstances.

He was married three years ago to Hannah Gilligan and as the fruits if this union there two children, a boy and a girl. the heart broken wife has the sympathy of all in her severe afflication.

In 1894 he received the nomination on the Democratic party for Member of Assembly, but owing to dissensions within the party was defeated. Four brother, John H. of DuShore, James K. of Cherry and Frank and Peter of Corning, NY survive him. He was eminently respected by all and a firm friend, a kind hearted, genial, generous man, whose sudden death cast a gloom over all the eastern part of Sullivan.

Among those from out of town who attended the funeral of Ambrose E. Farrell on Saturday, we noticed Joseph Ochs, Andres McDonald, Q.A. Kline, J. Leonard Deegan, James Carmody and wife of Towanda, , Leonard J. Farrell of Erie, Mr. and Mrs. James Keefe of Hillsgrove; Hon. Russell Karns, Harry Karns, Edward J. Mullen, Morgan Gavitt, John Flynn and Frank Gallagher of Laport. There were hundreds from Lopez, Bernice and other near by towns.

We are indebted to Lorin F. "Larry" Pardoe and to Nancy JENNINGS Crockett for the following information. In mid-2002, the Sullivan County Genealogical Web Project posted a query to its Message Board concerning a photo of Thomas Jennings and Effie Brown received the previous year from Angel Poreda. The picture was sent in con- junction with information about the Rogers Family Reunion of 1922. You can learn more about this and other reunion events on the Old Reunions of Yesteryear page for this site.

Larry sent along a family file on this couple, reproduced below, as well as the following message:

Just a note to tell you how much I admire the fine job you and your colleagues have done with the Sullivan County Web Page. I was born in 1941. My father, grandfather, and great-grandfather all came from Lewisburg, Union County, PA. My great-great grandfather was John Pardoe, a son of the Joseph Pardoe that settled in Lycoming County (now Sullivan County), PA about 1812. Sometime I hope to share what I have on the Pardoe Family and their marriages into the Molyneux and McCarty Families as well as some of the original families.
Hope this helps,

JAMES SULLIVAN AND HANORA KELLY

Preamble: In May 2006, we were contacted by Ruairi O'Sullivan of County Cork, Ireland with the following fascinating overview of the Sullivan name. We present it here as an introduction to the Sullivan family history in Sullivan County:

I sincerely hope that you find this of interest, I have browsed your website and find it fascinating. For obvious reasons I'm interested in your county. The Sullivan name is a very old surname in Ireland and dates back to the 6th century AD. I'm sure that you have looked up the name and its history and know that it is one of the most common surnames in the country, I will not bore you with further details there; I will however give you this little tidbit and a link to the area I live in which shares a common historical figure.

Layman's guide to the complicated eclectic mix that is the Irish surname in history:
The Celts passed on their lineage through their name, a physical feature/prowess or where they lived. Many historians believe that they were the first people to adopt an actual surname. In Irish (Welsh/Scottish/Breton etc), the surname indicated who you were related to; therefore we see in Irish the O' (meaning directly related to) and the Mac/Mc (meaning son-of). Daughters were all called Ni. When a person became renowned or was honoured, his subsequent relations took his name to indicate that they shared some of his fame; the easiest example here is one of our greatest national heroes, Brian Boru. He belonged to the O'Cinneide (Kennedy) clan, part of the Dalcassian Sept and lived in an area of Limerick/Clare. He is famous for expelling the Vikings from Ireland in 1014 at the Battle of Clontarf. Since then his direct descendants have been O'Brien.

Add to this mix the fact that the Vikings at this stage had spent over two centuries in Ireland, initially as invaders, then as merchants and as settlers. Next came the Normans, again a Viking race who had settled in Western France prior to being invited to Ireland to help fight against the Anglo/Saxons. The Normans ended up taking control of Ireland and became very much integrated with the indigenous Celts. Surnames such as FitzSimmons / FitzGerald are Norman as is Cogan (De Cogan), Burke (De Burke), and Barry (De Barry).

This is the technical part as I like to call it and is necessary to understand the aspect of the Irish surname. All was well for a few centuries and Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales lived in relative peace. Yes there were conflicts as there always will be when men of wealth want to increase their value, but in the whole people got on with living. Then, in the 15th century, the English crown wanted to extend its influence over the French and Spanish; this sparked off more than wars with France and Spain. The Irish/Scots and Welsh all decided that they wanted their lands back, Spain oversaw the Netherlands and most of the Benelux states, and the Germanics aligned themselves with their Frankish brothers. Again, not wanting to get into the vast depths of history, the outcome in Ireland was suppression of a common identity which lasted until the early parts of the 20th century. This is where the surname starts to create difficulties. The nobility in Ireland were at this stage a mix of Celt and Norman, initial enemies but had learnt tolerance and had intermarried. Blood mixed and it was difficult to see who sided with the king in England. A divide and conquer approach was taken where vast sways of land and people were owned by landlords loyal to the king. This bred nationalism in so much as the people at the time understood the term. Many (rich and poor) left or were pushed out. They went to mainland Europe or to the New Worlds. When they arrived at their new destinations, many wanted to lose their Irish-nis. Therefore Celtic names that had already been anglicised (O'Suilleabhain became O'Sullivan) now dropped the Irish part and became Sullivan; likewise with the Norman names-- FitzSimmons became Simmons etc.

The ones that stayed in Ireland held their names and did so for another few hundred years. Then came what was known as The Famine; this happened in the mid-nineteenth century when the potato crop failed and many of the poor died in thousands. Food was plentiful but, like all poor, they didn't have the means to buy it. There were options and many took them, Soup kitchens were organised by the English. These were in effect workhouses where food was given for work; however you had to renounce your faith, your roots and swear allegiance to the crown. It's hard to say no when you and your family are dying of starvation. Faith and nationality are easily relinquished for survival. The term "He took the soup" came from this. Again O'Neills/O'Sullivans/O'Hogans/McCarthys/McLoughlins etc lost the O or Mac/Mc. The next blemish on the surname came when people arrived in Ellis Island or similar landing zones. Due to language, illiteracy, dialect or just tiredness names were mis-spelled. O' Mahony became O'Mahoney, O'Callanan became Callinan, O'Cavanaugh became Kavanagh etc.

As I said at the beginning, I hope this is of interest as it may show you where the individual your county's named after hailed from. His family possibly came to the States during the time when, due to religious or national suppression, to stay was far more dangerous that the sea crossing. He is likely to have lost his Irish name somewhere on the crossing or prior to if he was of a wealthy family.

I live in East Cork, in a village called Cloyne. This is about 5 miles from Shanagarry where Penn Castle is, one of the many homes of William Penn before he too moved to your side of the world. Link to www.cork-guide.ie and go to TOWNS; pick Middleton. There are many more connections to this castle on websites ,but it is overgrown, now owned by a world famous potter who is trying to get approval to renovate it. So, here you have an O'Sullivan showing the way for Pennsylvanians.

In mid-November 2002, we received an e-mail from the late Charles Wayne Sullivan, asking if Bob Sweeney, the Sullivan County Genealogical Project manager, could confirm a relationship with Hanora Kelly. Hanora was the wife of an emigrant ancestor of Charles to the Overton-New Albany area. That ancestor was James Sullivan. In turn, Hanora Kelly was the sister of Dan Kelly, the great-grandfather of Bob Sweeney, and father of Bob's paternal grandmother Elizabeth Agnes (Kelly) Sweeney, Charles was a great, great grandson of James and Hanora Kelly Sullivan. As it would turn out, Charles was also a descendant of several other prominent families in Sullivan County history (witness the photo below of two of hs German-American ancestors from the Kisner and Dieffenbach lines!). You can learn more about the Kisner ancestry in the section devoted to that family on Faces and Families of Old Sullivan County, Group One, and in The Descendants of William J. Kisner and Catherine Thrasher. The Dieffenbach heritage is presented in Streby's First Settlers of Dushore and is touched upon in many other places on this historical site. You can use the search engines on the top page of the site to look for other Dieffenbach connections.

Hanora and her four brothers were born to Timothy Kelly and Mary Touhey of Clonakilty, County Cork, Ireland and, according to both family legend and at least one family history, left Ireland at the time of the Great Famine to seek their fortunes in the United States. Their father Timothy either came with them or joined them later as well, and is buried at St. Basil's Cemetery in Dushore, PA. The famine and land dispossessions in Ireland drove over one million of the island's population to emigrate while another one million died, either of starvation or from the diseases that accompanied poverty and hunger. The trip across the Atlantic was no Sunday cruise either. There are many stories of the horrible conditions during the "crossing" in what were suitably called coffin ships. For example, Robert Whyte wrote a personal record of his crossing from Ireland to Canada in 1847 that was republished in 1994 as The Diary of an Irish Coffin Ship--1847.

The Kellys survived the dangers of the Atlantic and ended up in the area along the Bradford County-Sullivan County line....living on Kelly Hill. This community really sits right on the border and has connections to local families in Overton, Forks, Campbellville and New Albany. Hanora has always been somewhat of a mystery to the students of Kelly genealogy, at least for those children and grandchildren of Agnes (Kelly) Sweeney, Bob's grandmother. [Note: You can learn see a picture of Agnes and her house of birth on Kelly Hill on the Index or top page of this site in the left column. You can also learn a lot more about her siblings at The Family of James T. Kelly and at the Beirne Family Page.]

Agnes Kelly had a niece by her brother Daniel Kelly, named Helen "Bessie" (Kelly) Beirne. [Yes, we realize that it is confusing to have three consecutive generations with a Daniel Kelly in each: the grandfather who never left Ireland, the father of Agnes who was one of the five children to emigrate and the husband of Mary Leahy, and then Agnes and her brother Daniel, two of eighteen children of Daniel Kelly and Mary Leahy. Actually, there was a fourth Daniel, son of Agnes' brother who died in childhood after his father was killed in 1904 by runaway horses!!]. Getting back to this story, Bessie Beirne wrote a family history entitled In the Beginning...(Anchorage: Alaska Northern Lights Press, 1974). In a few brief paragraphs, we learn the following things about Hanora Kelly:

My earliest recollections are of visiting my grandparents at the Kelly home. They told how the four Kelly boys and sister came from County Cork Ireland in 1835 because of the great famine and decided to farm the high lands of Sullivan County which was later to be called Sugar Ridge because of the maple sap that was in abundance there.
[page 1; note that later on page 38, the author says the children emigrated in 1838]

Hanora Kelly married James Sullivan. They lived on a farm between New Albany and Overton. They built a lovely home--one of the best in the area; the home is still used today and the farm and buildings are intact. The farm is still in the Morris Sullivan hands. A gracious family was brought up by this fine couple who had 6 children.
[page 33; recall that this text was written in the early 1970's.]

Before the November 2002 communication from Charles Sullivan, this was the extent of knowledge among the children of Agnes (Kelly) Sweeney about her Aunt Hanora and James Sullivan. Now, through the gracious efforts of Charles and other family researchers, we can tell more. Charles sent us the folowing little history:

James Sullivan - born during September 1812 - left County Cork, Ireland for the United States in May 1837, arriving at the Port of New York in June 1837, as reported in his naturalization request filed at the Bradford County courthouse in 1841. It is believed he worked on the Erie Canal in New York State to earn monies to buy the farm. When the canal ran out of funding in 1841, James joined the first wave of Irish settlers into this area. The 1850 census was the first report of the Sullivan family in Albany Township. All the older family members were reported as being born in Ireland. James is believed to have met and married Hanora Kelly after arriving in this area. James could not read or write as was the case with many of the Irish immigrants of the time. Fortunately, that was not so much of a handicap in those days. He appears to have been a very good farmer and his land dealings were numerous. In June 1841, for $300, James bought the original farm of 300 acres, now known as the Morris Sullivan farm. Not only did he buy the original farm, he had a hand in all but one of the land purchases by Michael Sullivan of our present family farm.

He also bought land in Overton Township. James died in 1905 at age 93 of old age and was buried in Dushore. Census records reveal Hanora died between 1870 and 1880, and we know from the Beirne Family Page that her death date was about 1871..

The family legend of receiving a five mile tract of land in return for services in the Revolutionary War does not hold up (don't tell Mom). James showed up in 1837 making his arrival before the Civil War, but long after the Revolutionary War. Whether this was at the start or just before the potato famine is unknown (ended in 1849). Legends are based on some facts. Legend states he arrived with a brother who lived in Cherry Township. I originally thought that was "Jonk" (Jeremiah), who lived with the James Sullivan family at the time of the 1850 census. Jeremiah's naturalization request recorded at the Bradford County courthouse indicates he was the first Sullivan arrival in this area. Naturalization requests could be taken to any courthouse in the then United States and citizenship granted, leaving no trail in between. I have found no record of his death. Jeremiah should be some sort of relative. With a reasonably uncommon name, he should actually be easier to find in County Cork.

I believe one brother of James was Morris (Maurice) Sullivan. Note: the names Morris and Maurice appear to have been interchanged, depending on who was recording information. Morris was married to Ellen, both from Ireland. James, in 1848, sold to Morris 131 acres in Bradford County on the Bradford - Sullivan line for $131. There is a Morris Sullivan family listed in both the Albany Township and Cherry township census, which may reflect that there are two different household heads by that name. In the 1850 census for Albany, the Morris we believe is the brother of James is listed as 40 years of age and his wife Ellen is 35, both born in Ireland.

The family of James and Hanora is clearly listed in the 1850 census for Albany Township:

The Family of James and Hanora (Kelly) Sullivan
1850 Federal Census
Albany Township, Bradford county, PA
Copy From Charles Wayne Sullivan.
Note that there appear to be two pairs of twins at this time.

Morris sold land to a son (Patrick) in Cherry Township a couple of years after James sold the first partial lot to Michael. Interesting note here is Morris sold the land to Patrick for $1, but James made Michael pay the full price. He is believed to be one of two Maurice Sullivan's to die in early 1881. Patrick also died in early 1881, leaving a widow Mary Ann (Bahl) and several children. Land records show Patrick and later his widow were sued by William Sullivan, probably a brother.

James and Hanora appear to have had two sets of twins. On 29 March 1848, James and Hanora Kelly had twin sons: Michael N. Sullivan - direct descendant to Charles, our contributor - and Maurice. [Editor's Note: The first Marucie died in birth or in the fist year of his life. James and Hanora later had another set of twins, Edward and a second Maurice.] Michael stayed on the farm until the middle to late 1860's. The 1870 census found him living in Barclay Twp, working as a teamster. About the same time, Mary Louisa (used interchangeably with Louise) Thall, born April 6 1846, left the home of her parents, James and Carolyn LeFevre Thall at Ringer Hill near Cherry Mills, to work in Towanda. She worked as a domestic servant for a physician, as reported by the 1870 census. Apparently they met in that area. Louise was the grandaughter of Dennis and Magdalena Thall, the original emigrant family, who came through Phildelphia from Germany in 1820 and moved on to the Cherry Mills area. Moreover, Louise's sister, Carolyn Thall, played an important role in the religious heritage of frontier Minnesota, after joining a sisterhood in 1862 in Towanda, PA!. You can read about that experience at The Vocation of Sister Joseph.

In June 1875, Michael, living in Barclay, bought the first parcel of land from his father James, who first bought this land in December 1874. Michael then moved to Albany Twp. and began developing the farm. Word has it there was at least a house and barn when he bought it. On 19 June 1877, Michael married Louisa Thall at St. Basil's Church in Dushore, the Reverend Xavier Kaier presiding. The marriage was reported in the Bradford Argus of July 12, 1877. Together they built a new house, tore down the old one (where the chicken coop used to be), and built a new barn and several smaller buildings. All the lumber used was from clearing the fields, family sources state. They also drilled a deep well. Of all the land tracts composing Michael's eventual farm, James was involved in all but one.

In their spare time Michael and Louisa produced eight offspring and raised two orphans. The eldest, James Francis, is Charles' direct descendant. Unfortunately the destruction of the Pa. 1890 census in a fire complicates confirming all the children.

A family story has Michael as one of the farmers who transported stone to build the present St. Basil's Church. When they could do so, the farmers from the area would get together and each take a horse team to Muncy Valley. How the stones got from the quarry in Muncy to Muncy Valley is unknown. There they would hook two teams together and pull the stone UP Sonestown Mountain (very steep!!), then DOWN the Laporte side (no slouch!!!) to Dushore. For this, each received two plots in St. Basil's Cemetery.

Another story is of one Sunday during a blizzard, Louisa insisted the family go to Church in Overton - 4 miles away. The men hitched up the horses and had to tramp down the snow in front of them so the horses would not break their legs. They traveled through the fields as the road was badly drifted. They made it to church as the church services were ending.

Michael died on November 23, 1923 from complications after intestinal obstruction surgery. Louisa died on September 6, 1927 at age 81 from pneumonia with old age complications. Both are buried in St. Francis Cemetery, Overton.

Sullivan (1887-1916) and Frances Mae "Fannie" Campbell Sullivan Teeter (1887-1940).  Harry Rouse is Gene Rouse's paternal first cousin, and Anna M. Sullivan Rouse is Isabella Sullivan Rouse's paternal aunt. Other than Anna M. Sullivan Rouse who is Anna Rouse in the August 1939 photo, the other persons included in this note relate only to the preceding note and are not in the August 1939 photo.]

[Note: Mary Sharon Sullivan Gregory (born 1947) who provided the August 1939 photo is the daughter of Colonel John L. Sullivan Sr. and Dolores K. Monahan Sullivan, the granddaughter of John M. Sullivan and Josephine M. Lynn Sullivan, the great granddaughter of Michael N. Sullivan and Mary Louisa Thall Sullivan, and the great, great granddaughter of James Sullivan and Hanora Kelly Sullivan.]

[Note: The August 1939 photo was taken at the home of John M. Sullivan and Josephine M. Lynn Sullivan at 815 Wheeler Avenue, Scranton, PA and commemorates a family gathering to celebrate the silver jubilee of the profession of religious vows made on August 3, 2014 by Sister M. Roselle Sullivan, IHM.]

[Note: Rev. John W. Brennan, OSFS who is Jackie in the August 1939 photo told Ed Kelly in 2022 that his grandfather, John M. Sullivan, had a lifelong close relationship with his sister, Sister M. Roselle Sullivan, IHM. As was customary in that era, Father Brennan also told Ed that his grandfather would always address and refer to his sister as Sister. Father Brennan's grandparents, John M. Sullivan and Josephine M. Lynn Sullivan, named their second child Roselle Louise in honor of her paternal aunt, Sister M. Roselle Sullivan, IHM and her paternal grandmother, Mary Louisa Thall Sullivan. Roselle Louise Sullivan who is Rose in the August 1939 photo used the name Rose and was known by that name during her lifetime.]

[Note: The caption directly below the August 1939 photo identifies Jack as fifth from the left in the back row, Dad as sixth from the left in the back row, and Mom as third from the left in the front row. ]

[Note: Dad is John M. Sullivan and not Colonel John L. Sullivan Sr. who is Jack in the August 1939 photo. In 1939, John M. Sullivan was 54 years old, and Colonel John L. Sullivan Sr. was 23 years old.]

[Note: Mom is Josephine M. Lynn Sullivan (1888-1954) and John M. Sullivan's spouse. Mom is not Dolores K. Monahan Sullivan (1918-1998) who is Colonel John L. Sullivan Sr.'s spouse. In 1939, Josephine M. Lynn Sullivan was 51 years old, and Dolores K. Monahan Sullivan was 21 years old. Dolores K. Monahan Sullivan is not in the August 1939 photo.]

[Note: Rev. John W. Brennan, OSFS who is "Jackie" in the August 1939 photo told Ed Kelly in 2022 that everyone in the family called John M. Sullivan and Josephine M. Lynn Sullivan Dad and Mom and their own respective parents Daddy and Mommy when they were growing up. Father Brennan still remembers his grandmother, Josephine M. Lynn Sullivan, teaching and explaining the appellations to him when he was a very young child.]

[Note: Rev. John W. Brennan, OSFS and Ann M. Brennan Toner who are Jackie and Ann in the August 1939 photo are Walter and Mary's children, Dad and Mom's grandchildren, and the grandnephew and the grandniece of Dad's siblings who are: Joe S. Ed, Anna, and Sr. Roselle in the August 1939 photo.]

[Note: In 1939, Josephine M. Lynn Sullivan and Anna M. Sullivan Rouse were both 51 years old.]

[Note: William J. Rouse who is "Billy Rouse" in the August 1939 photo was born in 1917.]

[Note: Francis Sullivan in the August 1939 photo is Francis W. Sullivan (1918-2006) and Joe S.'s son.]

[Note: Margaret in the August 1939 photo is Margaret (Purcell) Sullivan and Ed's second spouse. Edward P. Sullivan's WW-2 draft registration card indicates that his wife is Mrs. Margaret Sullivan. He was previously married to Mary A. (Dixon) Rowan (May 11, 1877- October 19, 1918). Mary and Ed had a daughter of their own, and Mary had a daughter from her prior marriage to Thomas Rowan. She remarried to Ed in 1906 after Thomas died. Ed and his successive wives lived much of their adulthood in New York City. He and his brother Joseph lived for many years in the Capitol Hotel in Manhattan. Both Ed and Joe are buried in Calvary Cemetery in Woodside, Queens County, NY.]

[Note: Rev. John W. Brennan, OSFS has confirmed the accuracy of Ed Kelly's identifications of the persons in the August 1939 photo and has provided additional information. Father Brennan's family moved from Scranton, PA to Philadelphia, PA in 1944, but his family visited his grandparents, John M. Sullivan and Josephine M. Lynn Sullivan, in Scranton many times while he was growing up and attended the Fourth of July parish picnic of St. Basil's Church, Dushore, PA where his grandaunt, Anna M. Sullivan Rouse, and her family were parishioners. Father Brennan's mother and his grandparents' four other living children are in the August 1939 photo. His grandparents had a sixth child, James (1920-1922), named in honor of his great grandfather, James Sullivan. Upon graduation from Northeast Catholic High School in Philadelphia, PA in 1954, Father Brennan entered the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales and was ordained a priest on February 6, 1965. Father Brennan has presided at the Mass of Christian Burial for many Sullivan relatives, including his grandfather, his parents, his grandaunts, Gertrude Lynn McKee and Sister M. Roselle Sullivan, IHM, his aunt, Rose L. Sullivan, and his sister, Ann M. Brennan Toner, who are in the August 1939 photo. Father Brennan has another sister, Jean Brennan Pivetz (born 1945), and a brother, Terence Terry Brennan (born 1948).]

[Note: The three photos below are posted on the FAG memorial of Sister M. Roselle Sullivan, IHM. Note the inscription of "Dad" on the August 14, 1910 photo. Dad is Sister Roselle's brother, John M. Sullivan. Jean Brennan Pivetz has advised me that her mother, Mary E. Sullivan Brennan, made the handwritten inscription on the August 14, 1910 photo of Sister Roselle with her brother, John M. Sullivan. Jean Brennan Pivetz, who is the younger sister of Rev. John W. Brennan, OSFS is not in the August 1939 photo. The August 14, 1910 photo, without the handwritten inscription, is in The Photo Collection of Alice Kelly Norton on the Sullivan County, PA Genealogy Project Website.]

[Note: The August 1939 photo of Sister Roselle with John M. Sullivan's son, Colonel John L. Sullivan Sr., (the third photo shown below) is contemporaneous with the August 1939 group photo in which he is identified as "Jack" in full uniform with his cap on. In the August 1939 photo of Sister Roselle with Colonel Sullivan, he is in full unform with his cap by his side. The obituary of Colonel Sullivan states that he entered the Pennsylvania National Guard in 1935 and the Army Air Corps in 1937.]

[Note: Sister Roselle in the undated photo appears to be younger than 48 which was her age in 1939.]
