we received a message from Madeleine Bunavage, her granddaughter:
Hello, this is Madeleine Bunavage, my parents being Rita Fitzgerald and Edward Bunavage, and my mother's parents being Joseph and
Ruby Fitzgerald, that is, my grandparents.
One day a while ago when I was thinking about my grandpa and how I really miss him, I typed his name into Google to see what I'd get. And one of
the searches found this page on your website. I would like to let you know that it is no longer accurate.
Ruby Fitzgerald passed away yesterday in her home; she passed in her sleep.
Her daughter, Diane Fitzgerald, my aunt, calls her early every morning to check up on her and see if she's okay. When she called yesterday morning,
she got no pick up. She went up to see if my grandma was okay, and found her laying in her chair, a thin blanket over her, fan going, tv on, eyes
closed, hands folded over her stomach, as she always has them when she sits. Her glasses were on but slid down her nose a bit, and her mouth
was open a little. She shook her lightly, noticed she wasn't breathing, and called everyone in the family to let them know.
I don't know why I felt obligated to tell you this, but I did.
Her viewing is tomorrow, which is June 9th, and the funeral the next day at Saint Basils. We're all going to miss her very much, it's hard
to believe she's gone.

raised registered Polled Herefords. I am attaching one of my favorite photos of dad with his
prized bull, Jerry Justin Banner the 3rd, on the farm at Shamrock Isle Estates.
Jim's grandsons (i.e., Angela's sons), Martin Fitzgerald Gaines; who lives is in Dallas, TX and operates a commercial real
estate company; Andrew Garrison Gaines, who is married with their first daughter due a few weeks
from now; and Nicholas Graham Gaines, a music honors student at University of North Texas, treasured
their time with Granddad. Jim passed away in 1997.

Lewis O. Kinsley of Cherry township died
at the home of his son-in-law, Kemerly Conner Tuesday at the age of 85
years.
He is survived by four daughters, Mrs. W.J. Schaad of Mildred, Mrs.
B.F. Saxer of Cherry Township, Mrs. Ford Walcott of Athens and Mrs. Kemerly
Conner of Cherry township, and two sons, Howard and Arthur Kinsley both of
Cherry township. Since the death of his wife Mr. Kinsley has made his home with
his children and for some time past he has lived with his daughter, Mrs. Connor.
On Tuesday morning Mr. Kinsley arose as usual about the time the family were
ready for breakfast. After speaking to those in the kitchen he went out towards
the barn remarking that he would soon be back. After the family was finished
eating and he had not returned a search was made for him and his body was found
hanging from a rafter in the cowshed. He had succeeded in fastening a rope
around one of the rafters, about as high as his head, and then knotted the rope
around his neck, leaned forward, letting his weight rest on the noose. Life was
extinct when he was found.
Mr. Kinsley was a remarkably spry man for his
age. He was able to read the newspaper for hours at time without the use of
glasses. He was also very active on his feet, helping with the chores and work
and apparently taking an active interest in what was going on around the
neighborhood. No cause can be assigned for his rash act.
Funeral service will
be held form the home of his daughter, Mrs. Kemerly Conner, Friday afternoon at
2 o'clock. Interment in the family plot in Bahr Hill

A Kinsley Pictorial Mystery: Who is "Grandpa" and "Grandma"?
Let's turn for a moment to the Kinsley family photographic mystery that we mentioned at the beginning of this page. In November 2007, Lyle Rockwell sent us several scans of photographs he had purchased at some time at a garage sale or flea market. The subjects of those photos were "Vernie" Kinsley, "Annie" Kinsley, Ellen Kinsley, Ward Bahr and Jennie Baker. It was easy enough to establish that Vernie and Annie were daugthers of Lewis and Amanda (Colley) Kinsley, but who were the others and how did they relate? Moreover, a set of comments on the backs of these pictures suggested that the Kinsleys were relatives of "Grandpa" and "Grandma". Who could THEY be? Here are the pictures, transcriptions of what was written on their backsides, and so forth, and a copy of Bob Sweeney's biographical analysis.

Here is what Bob Sweeney was able to conclude about the individuals pictured above:
Jennie R. Baker, the teacher in the last photo, was the daughter of Lyman and Elizabeth (Graifly) Baker, and the family lived on a farm in Cherry township. Jennie married Levi "Nelson" Cox, son of John B. Cox and Harriett Heppler. Jennie and “Nelson” lived in Bernice in 1899 where he was a track layer.
Vernie Kinsley is Alverna (Kinsley) Walcott. You can other pictures of her on the Conner Gallery Page. Annie Kinsley is Annie (Kinsley) Saxer, her sister, also pictured on that page, children of Lewis O. Kinsley and Amanda Colley. This was a large German family in the Dushore area.
Ward Bahr is likely Warden M. Bahr, born in 1875 and buried at Fairview (Bahr Hill) Cemetery. This would make him more than a “friend”. The Kinsley girls’ grandparents were Charles Kinsley and Mary Bahr—you can find them elsewhere on this page. Ward's grandparents were Daniel and Mary (Graifly) Bahr. Both Daniel and Mary Bahr were siblings, children of Daniel and Magdalena (Reeser) Bahr. Therefore, Ward Bahr and the Kinsley sisters, Annie and Vernie, were actually second cousins. Ward eventually married Emma Epler. You can see more about his background and family at Descendants of Daniel Epler and Mary Hartman.
As far as I can tell, the only “Ellen Kinsley” that I can find is a child of William and Sarah (Gansel) Kinsley; Sarah was a daughter of Obed and Catherine (Swank) Gansel [see the Gansel family link below for more information on the Gansel family and its links to the Kinsleys]. William was the brother of Lewis O. Kinsley, the father of Vernie and Annie. Ellen, listed as “Ellie C.” in the 1880 census and called “Allie C.” when she was an adult, was born in 1874 and died in 1944. She was married to William Stiff. Carol Brotzman has created a Stiff-Kinsley Ancestry Chart that helps illustrate all these family connections. Carol has also prepared four other ancestral charts to further our understanding of the relationships mentioned here:
Ellen/Allie Kinsley Ancestry Chart
Sarah Dieffenbach Ancestry Chart
William F. Kinsley Ancestry Chart
Sarah Gansel Ancestry Chart
Ellie/Allie had several siblings. However, for one of them to be married to someone who could be the “sister-in-law” of this Ellen, and therefore also a “cousin” by marriage to Vernie and Annie, the “grandpa” would have to have been one of the husbands of a sister of this Ellen. Or, perhaps it could be a brother of William Stiff; that seems a bit of a stretch, since two of his brothers, John B. and Aaron never married, as far as I can tell. There was a third brother, Charles Stiff, but I know nothing of his biography. I hope you follow me in these ruminations.
Practically speaking, there are therefore really only two candidates, both sisters of "Ellen" Kinsley: (1) Emma Kinsley, who married David Franklin "Frank" Cox…this would make him the “Grandpa” and her the “Grandma” that had Jennie Baker as a teacher, by the way, or, (2) Mary Kinsley, who married first to Charles Dieffenbach, and then later in life to Freeman Martin; if she is the right sister, then Charles Dieffenbach or Freeman Martin is “Grandpa” and Mary is “Grandma”. I am open to persuasion.
It might be interesting to point to a few other connections among these people. First, Nelson Cox and Frank Cox were brothers, sons of John B. and Hannah (Heppler) Cox. We mentioned earlier the Zaner family name; Mary Ann Zaner, daughter of Adam Henry and Fietta (Wentzel) Zaner, was also the granddaughter of Jacob and Susannah (Bahr) Wentzel. Susannah was yet another child of Daniel and Magdalena (Reeser) Bahr. So, as a result, Mary Ann Zaner was also a second cousin to the children of both Lewis and William Kinsley.
Here is another connection: Amox Cox, brother of John B. Cox, the father of Frank and Nelson Cox, married Hannah Zaner, sister of Adam Henry Zaner and therefore the aunt to Mary Ann Zaner. The connections never seem to end!
Note also that Ellen "Ellie" Kinsley, daughter of William and Sarah (Gansel) Kinsley was a first cousin of Vernie and Annie Kinsley. All of these families were linked, often more than once, by marriage and descent.
You can learn more about the families at:
The Heritage of John Bahr

But, meanwhile, who were "Grandpa" and "Grandma"?
Now back to the children of Lewis Kinsley....
