The Cherry Mills Photo Album
of the Carden Family
15 October 2005
Copyright © 2005, Michael A. Dempsey
The Sullivan County Genealogical Web Page is honored to present the Cherry Mills Photo Album of the Carden Family, thanks to the generous permission of Michael A. Dempsey, its conservator. The photo album is from the Lambert home at Lambert Farm in Cherry Mills, Sullivan County, PA. It is a bound hard-cover album in size 8 ½” x 11”. The front cover is missing. The back cover remains in place and has a clasp that appears to allow the front and back covers to be clasped together. The album was in a box with a large number of loose black and white photos and a set of smaller, black paper photo albums, 2 of smaller size and 2 of a larger size. This album appears to come from the Carden family as one of the items that belonged to Anthony and Ellen (Carden) Dempsey. It appears to date from about the 1890’s.
Editor's Note: There are many photos of the Lambert family further down this page. However, you can also learn more about their history at Mike Dempsey's Lambert Family History: Part 1 and Lambert Family History: Part 2. There is also information about the intermarriage of the Lambert and Landback families at Descendants of John Landback.
The album has 20 pages which each hold a photo card that is 4 1/4" by 6 1/2".
It has 4 pages which each hold 4 smaller photos that are 2 1/2" by 4".
Most of the original photos appear to be in their original locations in the album.
Here is a description of what was found on each page.

John Carden Mr & Mrs John Carden
Pages 2-3:
John Carden (1834-1906) was a brother of Ellen (Carden) Dempsey. He was married to Mary Timblin (1832-1910). They had 5 children including a son John (born about 1861). The circumstantial evidence is that these photos are of that son John (Ellen’s nephew) with his wife and their son also named John. Ellen was 20 years younger than her brother John and but only 7 years older than her nephew John.
1880 census – Archbald, Lackawanna County, PA:
John Carden family (Ellen Carden’s brother): John (age 44), Mary (age 46), James (age 22), John (age 18), E. Catherine (age 7), A. Mary (age 5)
1900 census – Archbald, Lackawanna County, PA:
John Carden family is living with Bergie Langan (age 48) and his son John Langan (age 30). John Carden (age 33, track layer), Mary A (age 28), John (age 6), Rita (age 2). The elder John Carden here is listed as 5 years younger than expected based on the 1880 census data. If the deductions are accurate, then the baby photo is from 1894 and the parents are about 28 and 23 years old, respectively at that time.

“Lavelle Gerry Scanlin”
Pages 4-5:
The name "Lavelle" is crossed out under the photo. The name "Gerry Scanlin" is written in different hand next to the photo of a baby. This appears not to be an original photo from the album, but one that was added later.
It appears to be a baptism photo of Geraldine (Dempsey) Scanlin. She was the daughter of John M. Dempsey and Blanche (Sick) Dempsey. John M. Dempsey was the oldest son of Anthony and Ellen (Carden) Dempsey. One of the loose photos matches the style and studio for this baby picture. The back of that photo has written:
Mrs Dempsey
John & Blanche Dempsey
(Gerry’s parents)
That photo is therefore assigned to this empty slot on page 4 in the album.
John & Blanche (Sick) Dempsey Geraldine Dempsey (1901)
John Dempsey family (abt. 1908): Harold, John (father), Theodore, Blanche (mother), Geraldine
Theodore Geraldine Harold
1870 census – Olyphant Blakely, Luzerne County, PA:
Anthony Dempsey (age 27) appears first in 1870 census in Olyphant living in the home of John & Margaret Maginty. John Dempsey (age 25) is also living in this household along with other boarders Michael Noon, Dominick Noon, and Mary Gallagher. This evidence suggests that John and Anthony are likely brothers but this is not proven.
1880 census – Cherry Township, Sullivan County, PA:
The James Gilligan family is family #223 in this census (see below). Family #222 is Peter McDonell. Anthony Dempsey family: Anthony (age 38), Ellen (age 27), John (age 6), Edward (age 5), Catherine (age 4), Elizabeth (age 2), James Carden (father-in-law, age 75), Catherine Carden (mother-in-law, age 65)
1900 census – Cherry Township, Sullivan County, PA:
Anthony Dempsey family: Anthony (age 59), Ellen (age 53), Elizabeth (age 20), Nellie (age 18), Maggie (age 15), David (age 13), Robert (age 11), Martin (age 7). A match for John Dempsey of this family is not found in 1900 census. Edward Dempsey is found in Olyphant, PA as a boarder with trade of blacksmith living with the Fadden family.
1910 census – Cherry Township, Sullivan County, PA:
Long family: Hiram, Sarah, Elizabeth W (also see this family below)
Dempsey family: Anthony, Ellen, Margaret, Martin (David, age 23 and Robert, age 21 are not found in 1910 census)
The family of John M Dempsey is found back in Cherry Township in 1910 census. Here we find John M (age 35), Blanche (age 30), Geraldine (age 9), Harold (age 7), and Theodore (age 5). The census image is truncated on the left.
1920 census – District 153, Dushore, Sullivan County, PA:
John M Dempsey died in 1911. His wife, Blanche remarried to John Everling and their family appears here: John M Everling (age 41), Blanche (age 40), Geraldine Dempsey (age 19), Harold (age 17), Theodore (age 15)
1920 census – District 149, Cherry, Sullivan County, PA:
Ellen (Carden) Dempsey died in 1912. In 1920, the second youngest child Robert Dempsey and his family are living on the family farm with Anthony who died two years later in 1922.
1930 census – District 5, Dushore, Sullivan County, PA:
Everling family: John (age 52), Blanche W (age 50, Theodore M Dempsey (age 25). Geraldine married Francis Scanlin.

Nellie Riordan
Pages 6-7:
Nellie Gilligan Riordan (1868-1936) was married to Peter E. Riordan (1867-1925).
Ambrose E. Farrell (1848-1896) married Mary Bergan (1848 – 1881) in May, 1890. Mary Bergan Farrell is buried in St. Basil’s Cemetery Old Graveyard section. After his first wife’s death, he remarried to Hannah (aka Anna) Gilligan. Hannah’s sister Nellie Gilligan married Peter Riordan (see above) and her sister Mary Gilligan married James P. McGee (see page 16 below). Ambrose and Hannah had 3 children shown in the photo below. The 1880 census records show Ambrose and Mary and the 1900 census shows Hannah and the 3 children after the death of Ambrose in 1896.

Unknown girl Mary Carden & friend
Pages 12-13:
Mary Carden (1836-1900) was a sister of Ellen (Carden) Dempsey and Mary Carden (abt. 1868 – unknown) was also a daughter of Ellen’s brother John Carden and his wife Mary (Timblin) Carden (see page 3 above). This photo looks like a match for Mrs. John Carden on page 3 with the same pose and same dress. Therefore it seems likely that Mary Carden in this photo is the wife of John Carden (Ellen’s nephew) rather than Ellen’s niece Mary.

Paper photo.
There is very little known about the immediate family of Anthony Dempsey who settled in Cherry Mills. We know from Anthony’s death certificate that his father’s name was Edward Dempsey. We do not know his mother’s name nor do we know names of siblings. We also do not know the location in Ireland where Anthony was born and where he lived before coming to the U.S.
A sensible guess is that Edward Dempsey in this photo is the brother of Anthony Dempsey, probably older and named after his father. It must be noted, however, that the mother of Ellen Carden is Catherine Dempsey so another possibility is that Edward Dempsey shown here is somehow related to Catherine Dempsey’s family. There is no evidence that the families of Catherine Dempsey and Anthony Dempsey (Catherine’s son-in-law) are at all directly related.

Lambert Family Photos
The photos in this section are selected from those found in the same box as the photo album, but not part of the album. Identities are not known or not confirmed for most of the photos in this section.
Metal plate photo:
Adult woman in long, dark dress, hat fully covering head, standing with right hand resting on stairway post and large tree illustration in background. This metal plate photo was wrapped in a piece of paper with the notation:
Marked
Aunt Kate Dempsey
Frank Dempsey
Taken in Dushore 1890
This photo is very similar to the other metal plate photos in the album and may belong with the album.
The family connection of the woman in this photo is not known. She cannot be Catherine (Dempsey) Carden who died in 1888 given the notation that the photo was taken in Dushore in 1890. One theory is that she is a sister of Anthony Dempsey. This fits the time period, location, and the reference to “Aunt Kate Dempsey” but no hard facts are found to support this conclusion. The reference to Frank Dempsey is a mystery.
The following photo cards are the same 4 1/4" by 6 1/2" size as those that appear on pages 1-20 in the album. One of these photos may belong to page 1 of the album.
1. Adult couple (late 20's or 30's). Man is seated, hands resting on knees, dark suit and bow tie, mustache, dark, short hair. Woman is standing in long, dark dress with her hands clasped behind her back. "Dean" studio "Williamsport, PA"
2. Baby (less than 1 year old) in long, white outfit, possibly a baptism outfit. "E. F. Madden" studio, "Lopez, PA." Note that Nellie Riordan and Jim & Mary Ann McGee shown in this album lived in Lopez, PA.
3. Family photo, all adults. Man in dark coat and vest standing in back on left with hat set back on his head. Woman in white dress with light color straw hat squarely on head standing in back on right. Woman seated in front left in dark dress holding straw hat on her lap with right hand.
