Mrs. Jerusha ROBB, died on Tuesday last in Muncy Creek Twp., aged 82 years and 5 months. She was among the first settlers of Muncy Valley and wife of Capt. John ROBB, of the Revolutionary War, whom she survived about 50 years. She was in Fort Augusta at the time James Brady, brother of Gen. Hugh Brady, was taken there after being scalped and wounded in a skirmish with Indians at Loyalsock

Amos SIMPSON, died in Muncy Twp. yesterday morning, at an advanced age

Henry BILLMAN, committed suicide on Thursday night of last week by hanging himself to a bed post. He was from Clinton Twp., this county. His wife and family were away from home. Coroner Ephlin was sent for, an inquest held and a verdict given accordingly.

Since the interment, however, suspicions have been awakened, and doubts entertained as to its really having been the work of his own hands, and upon a further investigation of the circumstances connected with the melancholy affair, we understand that his own son, John, has been arrested, as the perpetrator of the act, examined and committed to the county gaol for further examination. Whether this is true or not we cannot say, but we sincerely hope it may prove incorrect.

Thomas COBB, 85, has taken his departure in NJ. He served in the Revolutionary War. He enlisted in the Army at age 16, and like most of the Jersey Blues in those dark times, stood firmly to his principles, and was in thirteen well contested battles; was at the battle with the Indians at Wyoming, and was with Washington at Valley Forge, and also with the great Commander at West Point, when Andrus was captured.

At Hughesville on Tuesday last. As the Battalion, was on parade and was entering the field, Mr. Elijah SANDERS, a resident of Muncy Creek Twp., who had been by some means got behind his company, attempted to get over the fence at or near the place where David M’CARTY, of this Borough, was stationed as a guard. M’CARTY in attempting to resist the forcible passage of Mr. SANDERS placed his gun against the breast of SANDERS with the intention of pushing him back, a tussle ensued, and the gun, which unfortunately contained a charge of powder, went off and the contents entered the right side of Mr. SANDER’S bowels. Dr. George HILL was immediately called to his assistance who carefully examined and dressed the wound, but without effect, as he survived but 14 hours when he expired, leaving a wife and two children to mourn their loss.

An inquest has since been held by the Coroner and verdict rendered that Mr. S. came to his death by the discharge of a gun in the hands of David MCCARTY. We may also state that Mr. MCCARTY has given himself up to the proper authorities and entered bail in the sum of $2,000 for his appearance in Court. As this affair will under go a judicial investigation we do not think it in place to say much upon the subject, but so far as we were able to learn, and we took considerable pains to get at the particulars, we have no hesitation in giving it as our opinion that it was purely accidental and without the least intention on the part of Mr. MCCARTY (Note – two spellings of M’Carty/McCarty)

David BARTOE, a very respectable and industrious citizen of Wolf Twp., came to his death on Thursday last under the following circumstances. It appears that he and his oldest son left home on Tuesday last for Danville in search of work, and on reaching there they were employed to quarry stone. On Wed. morning they commenced work and continued up to Thursday, at 11 o’clock AM, when a large body of stone gave way and falling on Mr. BARTOE so injured him that he survived but about 15 minutes after he was taken out. His son and another individual were also injured though not seriously.

The remains of Mr. BARTOE were taken through this Borough on Thursday afternoon, and were doubtless interred yesterday. He has left a wife and a large family of children to mourn their untimely loss.

Mr. H. was a very respectable citizen and one of the first settlers of that region, aged 82.

Mrs. Mary CUMMINGS, wife of Thomas, died Sunday last near Jersey Shore, in the 59^th year of her age

The wife of Elijah MARSHALL, of Silver Lake Twp., Susquehanna Co., was delivered the 22^nd ult, of four living children at a birth! They are all daughters and doing well at last accounts. Although but twenty-six years of age, Mrs. MARSHALL has already been the mother of eleven children!

A fatal affray took place in the vicinity of Jersey Shore , on Saturday night last between John F. HUNT, of Lock Haven and John STEWART of Nippenose Valley, this county, which resulted in the death of STEWART. It appears that HUNT was on a visit to STEWART’s, with whom he had been engaged in business in Lock Haven some years since, and was endeavoring to effect a settlement of the same, but being unable to agree a quarrel ensued, and at about 11 o’clock at night HUNT concluded upon leaving. On going to the field after HUNT’s horse, a second quarrel was had and several blows passed between them, without effect, when HUNT drew a dirk knife and stabbed STEWART in the heart, the blade entering the left breast and cutting off a rib. STEWART was found dead on the following morning and HUNT having repaired to Jersey Shore was examined before Justice LONDEN, and committed to the jail of this county for trial. They were brother–in-laws, and HUNT had received a slight fracture on the right arm, received probably in striking at STEWART.

The solemn sentence of the law was duly executed in Belvedere on 23^rd inst., upon Joseph CARTER Jr. and Peter W. PARKE, the persons convicted of being concerned in the murder of the CASTNER family of Warren Co., NJ. They both protested their innocence to the last. Notwithstanding these declarations there existed no doubt in the public mind of their guilt and the justice of their doom.

Mr. FOWLER, not far from SUTPHEN’s tavern in the town of Niles, was cruelly murdered by his father. It is said that the old man, who was in the habit of drinking to excess, on Monday night retired greatly intoxicated. Waking about two o’clock, he commenced abusing his wife, who at length, the door being fast, made her escape through a window, proceeding to her son’s, a short distance for protection. The son, wishing to protect the house, proceeded thither; but upon opening the door, was stabbed by the father completely through the body with a large sharp iron, and upon falling, blows were repeated, so that by the time another son had made his appearance, no less than twelve horrible gashes had been inflicted. The son is said to have been a worth man. There is no hope for his recovery.

He had his machinery insured by Lycoming Co. Mutual Insurance Co., to the amount of $1800. The building belonged to the estate of Daniel CALDWELL, dec’d, and was not insured.

A human skeleton was recently found under a pile of stones, a few miles above Mauch Chunk, supposedly to be that of a Pedlar (no name), who very mysteriously disappeared in the year 1830. Every circumstance now confirms former suspicions that a man by the name of ALBERTSON, who kept a tavern four miles above Mauch Chunk, but who has since died, was the perpetrator of the foul deed.

Miss SCHUYLER, ca. 17, a niece of Gen. Stephen VAN RENSSELAER, came to her death on Tuesday, last week, in a sudden and shocking manner. She had just left the Manor House in company with a daughter of Gen. V. R. in his sleigh, when it was run against by a pair of runaway horses. The pole of the sleigh, it is supposed, struck Miss Schuyler, sitting on the back seat, in the side, crushing several ribs, and causing almost instant death.

Mr. J. HILL, an Engineer on the Reading Railroad, was accidentally killed last week, by two trains coming in collision.

We received a letter on Monday last from a doctor in Birmingham, dated 23 April informing us that Fletcher ESTABROOK, well known in this county as a music teacher, has committed suicide that morning. A small note lay on the table requesting that the doctor write to the Editors of the Luminary and ask them to tell his few friends that life was a burden, too hard to bear and that he asked the forgiveness of all his scholars for the injuries he had done them.

He came to this county about 18 months ago. Possessing a thorough knowledge of music and fine talent for imparting instruction, he was not long in getting up several classes. His conduct and deportment as a gentleman, for the first year, we think was never questioned, but an evil hour overtook him – he fell from his former position in society and the remainder of the time he spent in this part of the country, was characterized by dissipation &c. His last act in this county was that of being married in jail, doubtless to evade the law, for the same night on which he gained his liberty from jail by marriage, he took the northern stage for parts unknown, leaving his wife behind.

A son of Jacob HOFFMAN, of Muncy Creek Twp., aged about 14 years, drowned in Muncy Dam some two week since. He had gone into the water to bathe with several other boys and being unable to swim and the water very deep, he "sank to rise no more." His body was recovered about a half an hour afterwards but life was extinct.

Orphans’ Court Sale – estate of David BARTOE, late of Wolf Twp. to be held 1^st Aug. on 44 acres of land

Two children, son and daughter of John SOANS, of Moreland Twp., the former aged 2 and the latter, 4 years, went out, on Monday last about 10 o’clock in the forenoon, to a neighboring wood to gather whortleberries, and becoming bewildered were unable to find their way home. They were first missed at noon of the same day and diligent search made for them immediately, but without success until Tuesday morning when the little boy was found uninjured in an oat field on an adjoining farm, belonging to John FRANCE. The little girl; we regret to say, was not found until about noon on Tuesday, when she was discovered in the Creek, a lifeless corpse – the vital spark having taken its flight. Her death, it is thought, was produced by a fall from a ledge of rocks, under which she was found, which it is presumed she attempted to climb around.

Mr. O’CONNELL, a farmer of Fairfield Twp., died on Tuesday last while in the act of cleaning out his well, by the falling in of a bucket. The bucket descended with such velocity, the well being about 50 feet deep, as to kill him almost instantly. He has left a wife and several children to mourn his untimely death.

Arrested on Suspicion of Murder – Eli WAGONER and John CARR, of Derry Twp., were arrested on Monday last on suspicion of having some time in Sept. 1845, murdered a young girl, named Margaret, dau. of Archibald CARR, of the same Twp., the body of whom is said to have been found in the neighboring woods a few days since. Margaret was a cousin to both prisoners, has been missing since Sept. last, having disappeared under the most singular circumstances. She was believed to have gone to St. Louis. We refrain from detailing the many rumors that are afloat in regard to this strange affair, as we do not wish to prejudice public opinion (Danville Democrat)

A horrible case of fratricide occurred in Greenwood Twp., Columbia Co., on Nov. 13^th inst. Two brothers, Jesse and John ROBINS, while engaged in hauling and stowing away some corn-fodder in their barn, became involved into a dispute about the place where to put it, the former using some violent threats against the latter, who was on a hay mow above him. After John had come down, Jesse, it is said, struck him on the head with a piece of oak plank, which resulted in the death of the former about 24 hours afterwards.

J. Fleming, son of John MONTGOMERY, Esq., was murdered in his tent in the camp of the 2^nd regiment of PA Vol., near New Orleans on the night of the 20^th ult. A letter received from Dr. C. H. FRICK, of the Danville Guards, dated 21 Jan.,: "We had a post mortem examination yesterday, on the body of J. F. MONTGOMERY, formerly from the neighborhood of Muncy, who was, I believe, murdered in his tent on Monday night. He was shot with a musket ball and three buckshot, on the superior part of the shoulder, passing down, fracturing the clavicle and ribs and entering the lungs. He was a member of the Irish Greens from Pittsburg." The person who was suspected of perpetrating this foul murder, we learn, was arrested and tried, but there not being sufficient evidence to convict him, he was acquitted. Mr. MONTGOMERY leaves a large circle of relatives and friends to mourn his untimely end.

Court Causes

By reference to the news in today’s paper from the army, it will be observed that Col. M. SOWER Jr., late of Lock Haven, Clinton Co., bearer of dispatches to Gen. SCOTT, was most inhumanly murdered in Mexico; and that Gen. HAMMOND, of Milton, died on the steamer, on his way from Vera Cruz to New Orleans. It was a short time since that the general’s son, Lieut. Thomas HAMMOND, was killed in a battle in New Mexico.

At about half past four o’clock on Sunday afternoon last, George F. KULL, of this place, committed suicide by hanging himself, in the garret of his own house. On the announcement of this melancholy and mysterious affair, Justice WHEELAND was sent for; who on arriving at the spot, immediately summoned a jury to examine into the matter and make a report. After retiring for some time, the jury brought in a verdict that the deceased came to his death by hanging by the neck.

The deceased, before going up stairs to commit the deed, told his wife he was going to lay down, when, in fact, he repaired to his room to commence the work of destruction, by first cutting a severe gash in his arm with a pen-knife, sharpened for the occasion. After his arm had bled for a few moments, he walked up into the garret, and with the assistance of a rope fastened to one of the rafters, hung himself. His wife having observed several queer movements about him during the day, concluded all was not well and went immediately up stairs into his room, and observing a quantity of blood on the carpet and not finding him there, was much frightened; knowing that he was in the house somewhere for he had not come down, she ventured up into the garret and behold there she found him – but lifeless. She rushed downstairs on beholding this dreadful and heart-rending sight in an instant and gave the alarm; in the moment the whole town was around. The deceased visited Philadelphia last spring, and, his wife says, since his return he has not been the same man. Other persons have noticed a difference in his conduct since then. The whole affair of so singular an act,is yet involved in mystery; but, it is thought, will come to light in a few days. The deceased kept a Bakery, Confectionary and Fruit establishment and had been doing a very excellent business. He has left a wife and four children to mourn his untimely loss. (Miltonian)

On Saturday evening last, a young man by the name of Augustus C. WELPER, a citizen of this Borough, met an awful death, by being upset and crushed beneath some heavy pieces of iron which he was hauling with his team. The accident occurred, we believe, in the vicinity of Loyalsock Bridge, near the top of the hill, on this side. When discovered, the unfortunate man was quite dead, the wagon and several rail-road car axles, weighing some 150 pounds each, were upon his body and head, crushing the same awfully and causing undoubtedly, instant death. William LOCHERY, a boy about 12 years old, whose parents reside in Brown Twp., was mortally stabbed on the 13^th inst., near the residence of his parents by a boy only 8 years old, by the name of Isaac HANEY, in a scuffle between them. Young LOCHERY received two wounds, one of which severed an artery near the junction of the arm with the shoulder, which caused his death in a short time afterwards. Isaac HANEY, the lad who inflicted the wound, was immediately arrested and committed to jail in this county, where he will remain until his trial in September. He appears to be an apt boy in most respects, but seems to care but little about his critical situation (Lycoming Gazette)

Son of Mr. MASH, of Shrewsberry Twp., Sullivan Co., was instantly killed Friday morning by the accidental discharge of a rifle, in the hands of an elder brother. The ball entered the temple, completely tearing off the whole forehead.

Child Lost – A little girl aged 7 years and 4 months, a step-daughter of a man by the name of WILLIAMS, residing a short distance from Laporte, Sullivan Co., lost herself in the wilderness on Thursday the 29^th ult. Mr. Williams had moved but two days previous to that time, to a new building erected in the woods a short distance from the clearing for the town of Laporte. He has access to the road and the clearing only by a narrow path. The little girl had gone to Laporte on an errand, and on returning home became bewildered and instead of taking the path that leads to her father’s residence, proceeded up the road several hundred yards then entered the wilderness. The most diligent search has been made for her by large bodies of men, who went from the settlements, and the only traces that have been found of her, so far as we have learned, are that her bonnet was found in the road near the place where she must have entered the wilderness, and that a place was found where she had made a play house with sprigs and leaves, and a nest made of boughs where it was supposed she laid the first night she was out. She has now been gone more than two weeks, and as the wilderness extends for many miles in length and breadth, it is reasonable to suppose that she has either been destroyed by some animal, or died from fatigue and hunger ere this, and from what we have heard of the nature of the wilderness (being grown up with the most dense thicket) we doubt whether any discovery will ever be made of her body.

The remains of Fleming, eldest son of John MONTGOMERY, Esq., of Muncy Creek Twp., who was a member of the 2^nd Reg. Of PA Vol., who was most inhumanly assassinated in his bed at New Orleans, when on his way to Mexico, in the winter of 1847, were brought to this place during this week, and interred in the Warrior Run Burying Ground, Northumberland Co. on Thursday last.

Found – The child of Mrs. WILLIAMS disappeared from Laporte on 29^th June last. Diligent search was made then and at many subsequent times, but all in vain, until yesterday afternoon, when some of the remains were accidentally found by Mr. FOUST in coming to Laporte from his house. They were about a mile and a half north of this place. Several persons from Laporte returned with him to make search for and recover the remains. All that were found, and the clothes, which were identified by the mother, were buried in the burying ground at Laporte this afternoon. I was called upon for the purpose of holding an inquest, but on account of the entire decay of the body, it was thought better to dispense with it. Lewis ZANER, JP, Laporte, 17 Sept.

Jackson FUNSTON, died at the residence of his father Henry FUNSTON, Esq, in Franklin Twp., on Mar. 22^nd, aged about 30 years. He was a merchant in Union Co., and the business was accidentally consumed by fire together with a considerable amount of money. Some time after this he returned home in broken health, with the fatal disease, consumption. "Peace to his ashes"

The body of J. Donaldson, son of Maj. Wm. COLT, of Danville, Col. Co., who disappeared so mysteriously, on the night of 21^st Dec. last, in Philadelphia, was found in the dock at Arch Street Wharf, on Friday evening last. An inquest was held upon the body by the coroner, when the absence of all marks of violence, and the fact that the gold watch, a small sum of money, letters and other papers, and the opera bill of the evening’s performance, which the deceased was known to have about him on the night he was missed, led the jury to the conclusion that his death must have been the result of accident, in some way, and they returned a verdict accordingly.

Elias PETTIT, a young man residing at Williamsport, was instantly killed on Wed. of last week, near Watsontown, Northumberland Co., while passing under a Canal Bridge, on a boat. The bridge was very low, and the handle of the rudder caught one of the sills, which fell and struck him on the head, crushing it to pieces, and scattering the brains about on the deck of the boat. This is truly a melancholy occurrence.

William, an estimable and worthy young man, aged 21 years, and son of George W. HEITZMAN, of Port Penn, near this Borough, died on Thursday morning last, by the caving in of a well in which he and his father were engaged in digging at their own residence. They had got down about thirty feet, when the son came out for a few moments, again descended (the father being at the windlass) and in a moment after reaching the bottom, the earth gave way, covering him to the depth of about fifteen feet. The alarm was given and a large number of men repaired to the place and every effort made to remove the earth and recover the body. They put in cribbing and succeeded in reaching the body about 4 o’clock in the afternoon, but owing to its caving in repeatedly, they were not able to get the body out until this (Friday) morning. He was found in a standing position, and we learn was not in the least bruised. This is truly a sad affair. He was a member of the Sons of Temperance.

Henry Clay, little son of James HULING, of Hughesville, was drowned in Muncy Creek. It appears the deceased in company with several little companions, younger than himself, left home between 9 and 10 o’clock, unknown to their parents and wandered to the Creek. The little fellow, from the account given by his comrades, divested himself of his clothing and entered the water at a point apparently shallow but terminating in an abrupt offset of several feet over which he unconsciously stept (sic). The others remained upon the bank and when, to use the language of one of them, "he went down into the hole and stuck up his hands, he called upon him to come out." When he sunk the last time they supposed that he was hiding and after waiting some little time they went to the nearest house, the lady of which, they aroused by telling that "Henry had hid down in the hole." The alarm given soon brought a number to the spot. Diligent search was made but nearly an hour elapsed ere his body was found

Capt. Philip DIMM, an old and respectable citizen of Delaware Twp., Northumberland Co., and about three miles below this Borough, committed suicide on Friday night of last week, by hanging himself. Mr. DIMM was always a very sensible man, a consistent member of the M. E. Church, but disease for some time past had affected his mind to a considerable extent, in which state he committed the act. He was upwards of 70 years of age.

A man by the name of Wm. EISENBISE, while intoxicated, made an assault upon a man by the name of John WRIGHT in the streets of Lewistown, on 7^th inst., which resulted in the death of the latter. WRIGHT had his skull fractured and lived until the following morning when he expired. A reward of $50 is offered for EISENBISE, having effected his escape, for his apprehension and confinement in any jail in the state. He is 25 or 30 years of age, 5’ 10 or 11" high and very athletic. His face is marked by scars received in recent fights.

Mrs. Cassandra, widow of late Daniel SMITH, Esq., of Milton, died at the residence of Gen. Hugh BRADY, Detroit, on 11^th ult, at an advanced age

On Saturday of last evening, Francis STAHL, a native of Germany, and his conduct has always been marked with propriety; but he may have been led to this act by the hopeless condition of his wife, who was insane, and that of his daughter, long confined to her bed by lameness, and unable to utter a word. Francis inflicted dreadful wounds upon the head and throat of his wife, with a razor and hammer. He also severed the throat of the daughter, aged about 18 years. The wife made her escape from the chamber, with her neck dreadfully lacerated by the razor, and her hand battered with the hammer, the handle of which broke in his hands. When the overseer entered, he found STAHL reeling to the floor, and instantly expired – the daughter lay in her gore, on the bed, with her throat cut from ear to ear. The coroner held an inquest on the bodies, and the jury reported in accordance with the facts here related. (Berks County Press)

William EMMANS was killed by another young man, named Augustus JODEN, at a store about two miles from Milton, on Thursday of last week, through the accidental discharge of a gun with which they were performing military evolutions. The ball entered the skull just above the left eye, causing instant death.

William FITZSIMMONS, died at the residence of his nephews, Joseph and Thomas DAVIS in Clinton Twp., on Tuesday last, at the advanced age of 96 years and 16 days. He was born March 1754. He served in the Rev. War under Capt. LONG and Col. James MURRAY for three months, and at the request of George WASHINGTON continued one month longer. He then served two months in the militia and was employed in the scout service under Col. John KELLY, until he enlisted in 1779 under Gen. SULLIVAN, serving in Capt. Geo. MORRISON’S Co. for 5 months and 10 days. He received a pension. His remains were committed to the ground at the Episcopal Church.

A shocking casualty occurred at Hughesville, near this place, on Friday evening of last week, which caused the death of a young man, named Ellis VAN HORN, aged about 17. He was sitting upon a harnessed horse, whilst his brother was passing a bucket to him. His horse, taking fright ran and threw him, and one of his legs becoming tangled in one of the traces he was dragged into the barn yard, where, coming in violent contact with a sled, he was supposed to have been instantly killed. Leaving the yard, the horse ran about a mile and a half, bruising and mutilating the lifeless body in a most shocking manner. He was an industrious and well-doing young man.

On Saturday last, Wm. VAN BUSKIRK, while driving from Hughesville to his home, was thrown from a two horse wagon and killed. He was alone and therefore it is not known how the accident occurred. The fact that an accident of some kind had happened was communicated to his family by the horses running at full speed to his residence. Search was immediately made and he was found along the road with his neck broken and dead.

Charles H. KERK Sr., died in Philadelphia on 30^th ult, in 60^th year. He was a member of the Lutheran Church.

Adam MILLS, aged 9 years, was killed on Saturday last, at the Rough and Ready Rolling Mill, by being caught and drawn in between the cog-wheels attached to the turning-lathe. It is supposed that his hand first caught, while playing about the wheels, which instantly drew the arm and head into their giant grasp and forced the whole body through the wheels and between the iron support on which they revolve. The body was dreadfully mutilated and death instantaneous. The roll-turner was not present at the time of the accident, and no one was near enough to render assistance in time. Eleazer S. PORTER, of Wilkes-Barre, committed suicide on 21^st inst, with a razor. On hastening to the spot, it was discovered that he had cut his left arm partly off and his throat from ear to ear. His wife and son were absent from home, and he himself had returned only that evening before, having been absent sometime, indulging, as was suspected, in intoxication. It is supposed he was laboring under mania potu, when he committed the horrible deed. The evening preceding he received a letter, in evidence before the Coroner’s Inquest, from his wife in which the greatest tenderness and affection were breathed toward him.

The Canal Bridge at Northumberland, near the West Branch, broke down yesterday morning about 2 o’clock, while the Stage coach, containing the passengers who had come in the packet boat from Harrisburg, was crossing. Stage, horses, driver and all were precipitated into the Canal. Benj. D. JONES, who had just started the Danville Rolling Mill, owned by Simon P. KASE, in Danville Borough, was killed instantly, and one of the passengers and the driver badly injured. Two of the horsed drowned. (Danville Democrat)

Hon. John SNYDER, formerly member of Congress from this District, died at his residence in Chapman Twp., Union Co., of Dysentery on Thursday evening of last week. He was the oldest son of the late Gov. SNYDER, and brother of the Whig candidate for Auditor General.

Dr. J. G. CLARKSON, an eminent physician, and highly respectable citizen of Columbia, PA, died on Wednesday last very suddenly, under the following circumstances: He rode in the afternoon to visit his large circle of patients accompanied by his nephew, J. Clarkson SMITH, who is a student in his office, and when on the way home, the Dr. complained of a dimness in one of his eyes, and asked him to examine it, and in a very short time lost his sight entirely, and soon became insensible. Immediately, however, before becoming so, he said to Mr. SMITH, "please drive fast," which were his last words. They got home about 5 o’clock, and other physicians of the Borough were called in, and a telegraphic dispatch sent to Dr. Atlee of Lancaster, but it was all of no avail. He expired about 8 o’clock in the evening.

John BAKER, of this Borough, was on Tuesday evening last, found dead in a fence corner, a short distance from the boat yard of Charles FRICK, near the Muncy Canal. Mr. BAKER had been sent earlier in the morning to the boat yard with several pumps. After delivering the pumps he was seen to go into the adjoining field, but no further notice was taken of him. About 10 o’clock AM, a fellow laborer at the pump manufactory called at the boat yard to look after him, and took away the horse and wagon used by Baker to haul the pumps. Not returning, in the evening search was made for him and he was found as above stated. John J. Crouse, Esq, summoned a jury and proceeded to hold an inquest on the body. There were no marks of violence on the body, and it is presumed he died with a fit. The deceased was addicted to the use of intoxicating liquors. He has left a wife and a large family of children

Mrs. Martha MYERS, died at Kingston, Luzerne Co., the last survivor at Wyoming, on 4^th inst., aged 89 years. Her father, Thomas BENNET, was one of the forty white men who built the stockade called Forty-fort, a name blended with one of the darkest tragedies that marks the pages of American history. She was about 16 years old when she saw that fated band, the last hope of the Valley, march forth from this feeble shelter to meet the savages who were laying waste their fields and giving their dwellings to flames. They went forth, most of them, "to return no more forever," for the near four hundred, not more than seventy escaped. Butler, who commanded the British and Indians, with cold blooded audacity, declared in his official report after the battle, to the English Government, that the Indians brought in after the action, as the trophies of the victor, "two hundred and twenty-seven scalps of the Rebels."

Mrs. Anna, widow of Jospeh ADLUM, died in this Borough on Saturday last, aged 76 years lacking 5 days. Having recently moved from their farm in the country into town, and surrounded by her family it was a reasonable hope that she might be spared to enjoy many years in our midst. But with a constitution enfeebled by long continued disease, she sunk unexpectedly and left her family and numerous friends in gloom. Mrs. Adlum was intelligent, fond of reading, of retentive memory and pious. The church mourns anew, the loss of another of her "old disciples" who loved-- "Her sweet communion, solemn vows; and hymns of love and praise"

Charles BODINE, died in Hughesville on Saturday evening last, of apoplexy, a merchant, aged 41 years, 9 months and 15 days. He leaves a widow and four children. The circumstances of his death were mournful indeed. He died suddenly and alone. To the shock of his family, he was found in his yard, lifeless.

Mr. Isreal DEWALT, a respectable citizen of Washington Twp., left his residence on the evening of the 4^th inst., for the purpose of visiting a sick friend, living at a short distance from his own residence. He was seen to pass a neighbor’s house on the way, and soon after to return, but it seems did not get home. The next morning he was found, laying by the roadside, dead. An inquest was held over the body, by Jas. H. Whitson, Esq., of Uniontown, which returned a verdict, that the deceased died of disease of the heart. He was about 30 years old. (Lycoming Gazette)

Andrew EVES, died in Muncy Creek Twp., on 10^th inst., aged 82 years and 6 days

Henry WENCK, a respectable and industrious laborer in the Montour Rolling Mill at this place, was caught about 10 o’clock, on last Wed. morning, by one of the pulleys attached to the vertical engine, which drives the fans, and most horribly mutilated by being crushed between the pulley and girders of the mill. One of his legs and one of his arms were fractured, and his thigh, abdomen and head most shockingly mangled. He survived, perhaps, about an hour afterwards, suffering the most excruciating pains. The accident happened to him while engaged in oiling the machinery and leaning against a post, which gave way. He leaves a disconsolate wife and two children to mourn his premature and heart-rending loss (Danville Democrat)

Peter DOCTOR, drowned in California on 24^th June last. The letter was received by us addressed to George DOCTOR of Muncy Creek Twp, father of Peter, by Messrs. Risk and McCarty. Peter, William RISK and Charles McCARTY, were travelling across the country, and for the purpose of seeing an acquaintance of Mr. Doctor, they employed the services of a ferryman with a small canoe, to take them across the North Yuba River. Two of them, Mr. McCarty and Mr. Doctor, got into the boat with the ferryman, and in crossing, the boat capsized, and Mr. Doctor was drowned – the ferryman and Mr. McCarty succeeded in swimming ashore. The body of Mr. Doctor was recovered in about 20 minutes after the unfortunate occurrence, and everything done, two physicians being employed, to restore life, but in vain.

Miss EMERY, a fatherless little girl about 12 years of age, drowned at Prospect Mills on 24^th ult, while a number of children were engaged at play along the Loyalsock Creek. Some four or five of them ventured on a raft lying below the Mill, which became loosened from its moorings and floated out into the stream. All the children except one, in their fright, happily escaped to shore. More resolute than the others, she remained, and in her intrepid childlike efforts with a pole, lost her balance, and fell into the stream, where she instantly drowned. The body was recovered in about an hour and twenty minutes after the accident, by the men on the work. We were informed by Dr. J. Tomlinson, the proprietor of the Mills, who with his own means directed the decent interment of the body on the following day at Buckley’s, Fairfield.

Rhoder [?] CAMPBELL, an insane woman, was burnt to death in jail (Lycoming Co.) on Thursday evening last by her clothes catching fire.. She was in the care of a man from another county, who was taking her to the Insane Asylum at Harrisburg, and by the kind permission of the Sheriff of this county, was lodged in one of the jail rooms for the evening. She had been in but a short time, however, before her clothes were discovered to be on fire. The poor sufferer made no alarm herself, and there were but a few shreds left of her clothing when found. She was literally burnt to a crisp and survived but a short time after the occurrence.

Elias served as the Register and Recorder for Lycoming County for many years. His son, George Washington Youngman (1819-1895), the oldest of 13 children, joined with and then succeeded his father in building a range of landholding and manufacturing enterprises in western Lycoming County. In 1844, he married Anna Elizabeth Ludwig (1818-1894), with whom he rasied nine children and shared a life for over fifty years. A CEMETERY – Through the exertions of Messrs. A. UPDEGRAFF, S. H. LLOYD, O. WATSON and J. F. COWAN, the citizens of Williamsport are to be furnished with a Cemetery for the burial of their dead. The location is within three quarters of a mile of the borough limits, on an elevated piece of ground. The ground has been leveled, fenced in and staked off into lots and walks and lots are offered for sale. This is a praiseworthy movement. When will the citizens of Muncy follow the example set them by their Williamsport neighbors?

Daniel WOLFE, of Mifflin Twp., lost his life by a sad and singular fatality on 18^th ult. He has been West, and was returning home through Bradford Co., when he met two gentlemen on the public road, while two others also came up then who were travelling in the same direction with himself; and just as the several parties were crowded together in their passage, a very long tree fell across the road and knocked several of the travelers down, tearing off the whole top of Mr. Wolfe’s cranium and seriously injuring his spine, so that he died after a few days of intense suffering. One of the other gentlemen was also injured some but not dangerously.

The number of persons meeting in the highway, as well as the sudden fall of the tree, rendered it impossible for them to get out of the danger. The tree, our informant says, was some 160 feet long; and the men cutting it were so far from the road that they had no thought it could reach there in its fall, nor had they though the thick woods, heard any persons travelling on the highway. Mr. Wolfe, we believe, was on horseback, as was also another of the travelers. Two were in the buggy. (Star , Bloomsburg)

Horrible Murder – An Irishman, James CAVENAUGH, at Miller’s Mines, near Minersville Borough, on Tuesday night last, in a fit of phrenzy threw his child, an infant, into the fire and burned it to death. He also stabbed his wife in several places so severely as to endanger her life. The murdered was arrested, and after a hearing before Justice Taylor was committed to prison (Pottsville Emporium)

NAME CHANGE – The name of the Post Office at Funstonville, Franklin Twp., in this county, has been changed from Lairdsville to Funstonville. Lairdsville, where the Post Office was first established, is situated about two miles above Funstonville, but the Office was moved some years since from the former to the latter place, and name remained unchanged, and hence the reason for Funstonville proper taking the name of Lairdsville

Robert RISK, an old and respectable citizen of this place, died in this Borough on 1^st inst., aged about 72 years

Mrs. Catharine, relict of the late John FRIBLEY (dec’d), died in Muncy Creek Twp. on 1^st inst., aged 63 years

Jacob SMITH, of Selinsgrove, hung himself in the attic story of his own dwelling house on the 1^st inst. He was until very lately, one of the Directors of the Danville Bank. Some strange stories of his propensity to steal articles within his reach are afloat, and it is said that he committed suicide in consequence.

Mrs. Catharine CRAFT, at the residence of her son, Samuel G., in Shrewsbury Twp., Lyc. Co., on 4^th inst., at the advanced age of 85 years. She was one of the first settlers of the Muncy Valley and resided in what is now known as Muncy Borough when there were but four or five houses. She leaves a large number of relatives and friends.

Abijah HUNT, an old Revolutionary Soldier, aged 91 years, died at Belvidere, on 9^th inst. He was the youngest of seven brothers who joined the army under Washington and carried a gun with the lock secured to its place on the gun stock by a string wound around by his mother. He slipped two bricks under his feet to make himself taller when the officers examined him. He was soon after transferred to the navy, its burthens (sic) being considered lighter and better adapted to his years. The vessel he sailed in was captured off the coast of France, and all on board were confined in a prison ship. He was transferred to an Irish, finally to an English prison, and retained one year, when he was exchanged. His life was an eventful one and he was a good patriot
