Anthony BOONE was dreadfully shattered by the bursting of a cannon at the Liberty Pole in Rush Twp., on the 4th inst. The piece was overcharged, so much so as to be almost impossible to escape bursting. Why will men carelessly and unnecessarily expose themselves in this manner?

This is the first of the many instances that we believe will yet meet our view of persons who incautiously expose themselves, and many of whom meet an untimely end in the discharge of fire arms in the celebration of Independence Day – yet notwithstanding the innumerable loss of lives in the manner stated, yearly, which we should suppose would be an admonition, there still appears to be no diminution in the number of lives lost or bodies so dreadfully mangled, even if life be spared, as to render them objects fitter of being inhabitants of another world than of this.

On Friday night it commenced raining and continued Saturday all day and part of that night with little intermission, which cleared the river of ice and raised the water about thirteen feet from low water mark. The ice, which lasted from about the middle of December to the 23rd of Feb., answered every purpose of a bridge for almost any burden, during the greatest part of the time. The ice had not been so thick for many years as it was during the present season

Register’s Notice – Sept. - See p. 191

It is an old adage with married ladies that they will stick to their husbands so long as a button remains on their coats, but in a case in Susquehanna Co. we find this good old saying has been departed from. The last Montrose Register, contains an advertisement of Olive BUTTON petitioning for a divorce from the bonds of matrimony, having, we presume got tired holding on to her last button.

The dwelling house of A. WOODWARD, Esq., was struck by lightning and considerably injured during a storm on Sunday last. The fluid first struck the chimney, entered the garret, descended into the second and first stories, injuring in its course the windows and casings materially in every room on the western end of the house, and finally vented itself through a window on the lower floor. Fortunately those of the family who were at home at the time, were in the other end of the house and no person was injured.

John LEWIS, of Washington Twp., had a barn struck by the electric fluid and totally destroyed, on Sunday the 5th inst. The grain, with the exception of 4 shocks of oats, had ball been taken in and to add to the misfortune, six horses perished in the flames. The neighbors who perceived the column of smoke, rushed to the spot and by the exertions of Messrs OAKES, VAN HORNE (who happened to be there at the time), DONLEY, BROWN, GETZ, PIATT and others, the dwelling house was saved from the ravages of the devouring element.

Bartholomew LAPORTE, Esq., died at his residence in Asylum, Bradford Co., PA, on Thursday the 11th Feb. inst., in the 78th year of his age. He was born in Tutle, France in 1758, from whence in 1776, at the age of 18, he emigrated to Spain and settled in Cadiz, where, through the same spirit of enterprise that led him thither, he in a space of a few years, accumulated a handsome fortune. But by a decree of the Spanish Government, banishing from within its limits all French subjects, and confiscating their property, his effects, among others, were all confiscated, and himself banished from the country. He sailed for the US and landed in NY in 1793, without money or friends. Soon after his arrival in this country, he accidentally, in Philadelphia, met with Monsieur TALEN, Viscount NOILLES, and other distinguished personages of the French nobility, under Louis XVI; although differing in political sentiments, (Mr. LAPORTE being always decidedly republican) at the particular request he migrated with them to the then northern wilds of Pennsylvania, where they selected as the place of their retreat, a romantic but fertile spot, on the banks of the Susquehanna, to which they gave the appropriate name of "Asylum." On this spot Mr. LAPORTE, by his industry and enterprise, in a great measure, retrieved his lost fortune and continued to reside on it until his death. The writer of this brief notice was frequently the recipient of his well known hospitality and the auditor of his social and animated conversation; and in short, was intimately acquainted with him, and his many amiable traits of character. He married an English lady in this country, and the fruit of their marriage was one son, whom, before his death, he had the proud satisfaction of seeing elected and re-elected, to a seat in the highest and most dignified deliberative body in the US, or the world – the Congress of the US.
