Lieber Schwager und Schwägerin,

deinen Brief habe ich gestern erhalten und daraus ersehen, dass ihr noch alle gesund seid, was uns alle von ganzem Herzen freut. Was uns anbelangt sind wir Gott sei Dank noch alle gesund welche zu Haus bei mir sind und das sind die zwei Jüngsten, welche die Haushaltung führen. die älteste ist in Towanda, der älteste Sohn arbeitet im Busch (Wald), macht sägen und hacken. Die zweite Tochter ist in Laporte, arbeitet bei dem Mäson (in Mason, Ort). Das ist die ganze Haushaltung, also sind wir nur drei im Haus und alle ledig.

Vor drei Jahren haben wir ein Haus gebaut, aber kein Blockhaus und den letzten Juli haben wir eine […] Scheuer (Scheune) gebaut.

Es gibt viele Neuigkeiten bei uns. Die Eisenbahn geht bis auf 4 Meilen zu uns Dampf. Sägewerke sind und werden gebaut. Wir haben nur 2 Meilen zu einer Sägemühle, zwei Großgerbereien 6 Meilen von uns.

Nächstes Mal mehr Neuigkeiten. Ich habe in 8 Jahren noch keinen Brief von dir erhalten bis zu diesem und habe schon etliche geschrieben, aber keine Antwort erhalten und so glaubte ich, du seist in die Ewigkeit oder in den Westen gegangen, wo so viele hingehen.

Laporte Sullivan County, December 15^th, 1872

Dear brother-in-law and sister-in-law,

I have received your letter yesterday and read in it that you all are still well what delights us wholeheartedly. As far as we are concerned we are all still healthy, thank God! It’s who are still at home with me which ist he two youngest who are doing the housework. The oldest is in Towanda, the oldest son works in the bushes (probably forest work?), does sawing and chopping. The second daughter is in Laporte, works in Mason (?). This is the whole household, so it is just the three of us in the house and all are unmarried.

Three years ago we have built a house but not a block house, and last July we have a built a […] barn.

There is a lot of news here. The railroad goes up to 4 miles to us with steam. Sawmills are and are being built. We have only 2 miles to a sawmill, 6 miles to a large-scale tannery.

More new next time. I haven’t received any letter from you in the past 8 years until this one and I have sent several but have not received any reply and so I thought you might have gone to eternity or the west where a lot go.
