Lieber Schwager und Schwägerin,

deinen Brief vom 10^ten habe ich richtig erhalten, und daraus ersehen, dass ihr noch alle gesund seid. Was uns anbelangt sind wir Gott sei Dank noch alle gesund. Du fragst, ob wir noch nichts von Deutschland erhalten hätten. Wir haben noch gar nichts erhalten. Als die Mutter tot war, so hat der Peter Triggel an mich geschrieben wie er verfahren soll mit dem Vermögen. Ich habe ihm wieder geschrieben er sollte es mit einem Wechsel schicken. Dann hat er mir wieder geschrieben, dass der Bürgermeister alles untersuchte und fünfhundertfünfzig Gulden erspartes Bargeld in der Kiste gefunden hat und 5 Grabländer und die Kleider bei einer Versteigerung verkauft wurden und auch noch viel Geld gelöst worden ist und dass der Johannes Hauk Kurator über alles wäre und muss alles in Ordnung machen. Das ist alles was ich weiß und das übrige was wir draußen gelassen haben ist wahrscheinlich noch in Sparkasse. Ich habe dem Peter Triggel gesagt, dass er damit verfahren soll wie er es für das Beste hielte.

Du hast uns noch gar nicht geschrieben wie viel Kinder du noch hast, da meine Kinder es gern wissen täten, so sei so gut und schreibe es und sie sprechen immer „wir möchten doch auch einmal den Onkel sehen“ und du hast auch noch nicht geschrieben was du treibst oder arbeitest. Ich will mein Schreiben schließen mit vielen Grüßen von mir und meinen Kindern

Laporte Sullivan County, January 19^th, 1873

Dear brother-in-law and sister-in-law,

I have received your letter of the 10^th correctly and seen in it that all of you are still well. As far as we are concerned we are all still well, thank God. You ask if we haven’t received anything from Germany. We haven’t. When mother was dead Peter Triggel wrote me how he should proceed with the asset. I wrote him again to send it with a bill of exchange. Then he wrote about that the mayor has examined everything and found 550 guilders in cash of saved money in the box and that 5 of the ´digland` and the clothes were sold at an auction and that a lot of money has been loosed and that Johannes Hauk was curator about everything and put everything in order. That is all I know and what we have left outside is probably at the Sparkasse (bank in Germany). I have told Peter Triggel he should proceed how he thinks is would be the best way.

You haven’t written us how many children you have left because my children would like to know. Be a dear and write about it and they also talk about how much they would like to see you and you haven’t written what you are doing or where you are working.
