Lieber Schwager und Schwägerin,

euren Brief vom 24^ten September und die 5 Taler habe ich richtig erhalten und daraus erfahren, dass ihr noch alle gesund seid. Was uns anbelangt sind wir noch wie früher. Die zwei Buben haben den Husten noch. Wir sind jetzt am Korn-Säen und Kartoffeln ausmachen, die geben aber schlecht aus. Das schlechte Wesen ist wieder nach New York, dort hat sie wieder geheiratet und ihr Mann ist auch wieder von ihr fort, so habe ich gehört, sie ist eine durchtriebene Hure. Ich habe besser als ein Wittwer als mit einem solchen Weib.

Wenn du wieder schreibst so schreibe mir was das Fleisch für einen Preis hat, das Vieh ist ungeheuer teuer. Ich habe ein paar Ochsen. Sie wollten mir 200 Taler geben, die Kühe sind von 30-40 Taler, wenn’s auch keine frühen Kühe sind. Wir haben 3 Kühe und 2 Stiere, die waren 2 Jahre alt und 2 Kälber vom April.

Du schreibst du tätest Öl machen aus Schmalz und bei uns nämlich bei dem Hermann Ring wollen sie Öl suchen in dem Grund.

Weiter weiß ich jetzt nichts Neues zu schreiben. Wenn du kommen willst, so kannst du kommen. Du bist willkommen einige Zeit, meine Kinder sprechen alle Tage davon. Sie wollen es aber nicht glauben, weil du schon einmal gesagt hast, du wolltest kommen, bist aber doch nicht gekommen.

Laporte, October 1865

Dear brother-in-law and sister-in-law,

I have received your letter of September 24^th and the 5 thalers (German coins) correctly and learned from it that all of you are still well. As far as we are concerned were are as before. The two boys still have the cough. Now we are sowing corn and dig up potatoes, but the crop is poor. The bad person is gone back to New York. She remarried there and her husband left her again as far as I have heard, she is a bitch. I am better off as a widower than with this woman.

When you write again write about the price of meat, cattle is incredibly expensive. I have a few oxen, they wanted to give me 200 thalers. The cows are 30-40 thalers, even if it is not early cows. We have 3 cows and 2 bulls, they were 2 years old and 2 calfs of April.

You write you did oil from lard and here, at Herman Ring’s place they want to search for oil in the ground.

I don’t have any other news to write about. If you want to come/visit, you can come/visit. You are welcome for some while, my children talk about it all the time. But they wouldn’t believe it since you have said it before that you would come but yet you haven’t.
