Lieber Schwager und Schwägerin,

deinen Brief, den du am 30^ten September geschrieben hast, habe ich den 8^ten Oktober erhalten und darin ersehen, dass du meine 2 Briefe richtig erhalten hast und du hast mir geschrieben, dass ich dir noch 12-14 Taler schicken soll, dann hab ich mir alle Mühe gegeben um Geld zu leihen, aber ich habe keines bekommen. So bin ich wieder an den Meilert, der hat mir einen Draft/Wechsel gegeben von 16 Taler. Damit hast du auf das Ehrie Relroth (maybe Erie Railroad) Depot gehen sollen und wenn sie es nicht nehmen, dann dem Expressmann geben und auswechseln lassen oder Kolecken (?) in Munthroß (?) und dir das Geld zurückbringen. Ich habe das alles in einem Brief getan, den Draft/Wechsel und 4 Taler Geld und den 19^ten Oktober fortgeschickt und noch keine Antwort.

Wie es nun ist, weiß ich nicht, ob du es bekommen hast oder nicht, darum habe die Güte und schreibe doch Antwort. Ich habe mir viel Mühe gegeben, um dir zu helfen und du lässt nicht von dir hören oder sehen. Meine Frau, deine Schwester, sagte, wenn es noch einmal zu schreiben wäre, sie tät es nicht, weil du nicht schreibst. Wir sind im Trubel/in Sorge es möge verloren sein.

Wir haben harte Zeiten. Was wir verkaufen, das ist billig und was wir kaufen, das ist teuer. An Lebensmitteln haben wir keinen Mangel. Du hast geschrieben, was du mitbringen sollst, da kann ich nichts sagen als dein Bettzeug und etwas Kiefergeschirr, wenn du kannst und Kleinigkeiten, die du packen kannst auf dem Land kann man alles brauchen.

Mehr weiß ich nichts zu schreiben als baldige Antwort oder dich selbst zu sehen. Was uns anbelangt sind wir Gott sei Dank alle gesund. Ich denke nicht, dass du Hausmiete mit diesem Geld bezahlen tust, denn sie können dir kein Geld nehmen aus dem Sack, du musst ein wenig aufpassen.

Baldige Antwort.

Die Briefe, die ich von dir bekomme, kosten nichts und wenn ich einen an dich schreibe, kostet es 3 Cent.

Nun noch einmal, sobald du diesen Brief bekommst, so schreibe Antwort. Du magst kommen oder nicht, so musst du schreiben, dass wir wissen wie es ist, ob du das Geld hast oder nicht.

I don’t know how it is now, if you received it or not, so have the be gracious enough to reply. I tried hard to help you and you’re not heard from nor seen. My wife, your sister, said if it was to write again she wouldn’t because you don’t write. We are worried it might be lost.

We have hard times. What we sell is cheap and what we buy is expensive. We have enough groceries though. You asked what you should bring. It would be nothing than your bedding and some pine tools (or dishes) if you can and a few little things you can get with you, everything is useful on the countryside.

I don’t know any more to write about than reply early or come soon. As far as we are concerned we are all well, thank God. I don’t think you would pay your rent with that money, because they can’t take money from you from the sack, you have to be careful.

The letters I receive from you don’t cost me anything and when I write a letter to you it’s 3 cents.
