Wertester Schwager und Schwägerin,

euren Brief, den ihr den 22^ten August an uns geschrieben habt, haben wir den 25^ten September erhalten und uns sehr erfreut darüber, dass ihr doch noch am Leben seid. Wenn ihr wollt, so könnt ihr alle viertel Jahr schreiben wie es euch geht.

Eure Briefe sind willkommen. Ich wollte wünschen, dass ihr persönlich bei uns sein könnt. Was uns anbelangt sind wir Gott sei Dank noch alle gesund und munter. Wir haben 5 Kinder, 3 Mädchen und 2 Buben, die älteste wird 11 Jahre, den 17^ten November, die heißt Katharina, der 2^te Philipp ist 9 Jahre alt, die 3^te Maria 7 Jahre, die 4^te Rosina 5 Jahre, der 5^te 2 Jahre bis zum 3. Dezember, Peter Nicolaus.

Es geht uns auch noch hart, unsere Kinder sind noch klein, sie können noch nicht viel tun, aber kosten tun sie genug an Kleidern und Schuh, aber ich hoffe, wenn uns Gott Gesundheit schenkt in 2 Jahren, dass es besser geht. Wir haben auch harte Zeiten gehabt. Wir haben eine Kuh verloren, für die ich 18 Dollar in Towanda bezahlt habe. Ich habe mir in den Fuß gehackt, wo noch 2 Zehen lahm sind und ich in 4 Wochen nichts hab tun können. Wieder hat mich der Philipp Karg um 100 Dollar gebracht in Arbeit und Geld. Ich habe ihm 40 Dollar in Geld bezahlen müssen. Er ist wohnhaft über dem großen Kring auf der Burg, er und Peter Dohm. Wir haben 14 Stück Rindvieh, 4 Ochsen, 3 Kühe, 2 Rinder, 2 Stiere und 3 Kälber vom Frühjahr. 2 Ochsen wollen wir verkaufen. Wenn du einen Kaufmann weißt, so schicke ihn; für 100 Dollar lasse ich die Ochsen gehen.

Mit dem Philipp Karg bin ich ausgefallen. Er hat michverklagt und ich habe ihm Land und Haus verboten bei dem Justus. Es ist nicht mehr wie es war mit Philipp Karg. Er ist verachtet in der ganzen Gegend und in Laporte hat er gestohlen. Er ist ein Spitzbub oder ein Dieb und Betrüger.

Nun lieber Schwager, wenn du noch bei uns wärst, ich glaube es täte dir besser gehen als in New York. Peter Dohms Bruder hat das Stück Land vom Peter gekauft für 300 Dollar und hat es nun bezahlt. Es geht ihm ziemlich gut. Er hat Christian Hundsingers Tocher, die Käthe. Er ist nicht mehr so wild wie er war als du von uns fort bist. Das Land ist schon ziemlich aufgeklärt. Es sind seit der Zeit, dass du fort bist 5 bis 6 neue Settler um uns herum gekommen. Es geht auch eine Straße bei unserm Haus vorbei von Laporte zur Mühle an dem kleinen Kring (Kreises/Grenzgebiet). In Laporte ist auch eine große Gerberei für Sohlenleder. Die Hemlack (?) werden geschält und die Rinder an die Gerberei die Bläck (?) werden an die Kring gefahren und die Kring hinunter geflotzt (?). Es gibt guten Verdienst bei uns und der Hermann Ring hat eine Mahlmühle an der großen Kring, wo du ihm geholfen hast das Haus zu machen. Alles was uns nicht gefällt in der Gegend ist der Frost. Es hat schon im halben September das Malzkorn und den Buchweizen verfroren und im Frühjahr bis in den Juni hinein reift es.

Jetzt schreibe uns wie es dem Hans Jerch (?) geht. Wie wir ausmachen könnten in eurem Brief, dann ist es der Hans Jerch (?) neben dem Bürgermeister. Wie es ihm gefallen hat in der Gegend wo er war und ob er in Deutschland geblieben ist. Und schreibe uns welche Margaretha gestorben ist und ob die Mutter noch lebt. Wir haben in 7 Jahren noch nichts von Deutschland gehört oder bekommen und wie lange ist es, dass ihr von dort Antwort gehabt habt? Wir haben schon 3 Briefe hinausgeschickt und den 9^ten Juli haben wir wieder einen nach Schaafheim geschickt, aber noch keine Antwort.

Laporte, September 30^th, 1860

Valued brother-in-law and sister-in-law,

We received your letter that you wrote August 22^nd on September 25^th and we were very delighted to see that you are still alive. If you want to you can write every quarter year how you are.

Your letters are welcome. I wish you could be with us in person. As far as we are concerned we are all still alive and well. We have 5 children, 3 girls and 2 boys, the oldest will be 11 years old November 17^th, her name is Katharina, the 2^nd Philipp is 9 years old, the 3^rd Maria 7 years old, the 4^th Rosina 5 years old and the 5^th is 2 years old until December 3^rd, Peter Nicolaus.

It is hard, our children are still small and can’t do a lot but cost a lot regarding clothing and shoes. But I hope when God gives us health that it will be better in 2 years. We have had hard times. We lost a cow that I paid 18 dollars for in Towanda. I choped in my foot so 2 toes are still lamed and I couldn’t do anything in 4 weeks. Again, Philipp Karg defrauded me of 100 dollars in work and money. I had to pay him 40 dollars in money. He lives over the big frontier on the castle, he and Peter Dohm. We have 14 cattle, 4 oxen, 3 cows, 2 steers, 3 bulls and 3 calfs from springtime. We want to sell 2 oxen. If you know a merchant, send him; I will let the oxen go for 100 dollars.

I put Philipp Karg behind me. He sued me and I banned him from my land and house at the judge. It is not the way it was with Philipp Karg. He is despised in the whole area and he has been steeling in Laporte. He is a villain or a theft and a fraud.

Now dear brother-in-law, if you were still with us, I think you would do better than in New York. Peter Dohm’s brother bought the piece of land from Peter for 300 dollars and now he paid for it. He is quite well. He has Christian Hundsinger’s daughter, Käthe. He is not as wild anymore as he was when you left. The land is quiet settled now. 5 to 6 new settlers have come since you are gone. Also, there is a street passing our house from Laport to the mill at the little frontier. In Laporte there is also a big tannery for sole leather. The […] are being peeled and the cattle brought (?) to the tannery, the […] are brought to the frontier and thrown (?) down the frontier. We have good wages hiere and Hermann Ring has a mill at the big frontier where you helped him with the house. What we don’t like about this area is the frost. In the middle of September it freezed the malt and the buckwheat and it is ripening from spring to June.

Now write us how Hans Jerch (?) is. As we read in your letter it is the Hans Jerch besides the mayor. How did he like it in the area he was and if he stayed in Germany. And write us which Margaretha died and if the mother is still alive. We haven’t heard or gotten anything from Germany in 7 years now. How long has it been since you heard from there? We have sent 3 letters so far and July 9^th we sent one to Schaafheim, but no reply yet.
