Lieber Schwager und Schwägerin,

deinen Brief, den du den 1^ten April geschrieben hast, habe ich den 9^ten erhalten und daraus ersehen, dass ihr noch im Sinn habt zu uns zu kommen. Wie ich dir schon geschrieben, so bist du willkommen. Vielleicht kannst du ein Stück Land kaufen bei dem Hundsinger. Es sind 10 Acker geklärt daran, ich denke für 300 Dollar und 250 Dollar zu bekommen. Wenn du kommen willst, ich rate dir nicht zu und nicht ab, aber in der Stadt bekommst du keine Heimat. Wenn du 150 Dollar hast, kannst du es kaufen, das Übrige wird auf Vereinbarung/Raten gemacht, wenn es Zeit und Umstände dir erlauben bei. So kannst du ja einmal zu Besuch kommen. Ich erlaube dir 5 Dollar von meinem Geld. In einer Woche kannst du her und hin.

Ich täte es mögen mit dir mündlich zu sprechen wegen einiger Umstände. Ich habe denselben Tag als ich deinen Brief bekam auch einen aus Ohio von Barbara Huber, geborene Senerdin, bekommen, welchen ich hier beilege. Mit dem Geld ist weiter nichts passiert. Wenn du kannst, so schicke mir 10 Dollar, wenn du aber kommen willst, so schicke keins oder wenn es dir hart ankommt, so behalte es bis du besser kannst. Ich habe den 5^ten April eine Versteigerung gehalten und habe 9 Stück Vieh verkauft in 6 Monaten zu bezahlen. Da habe ich gute Noten dafür von 124 Dollar. Jetzt habe ich noch 2 Ochsen, 2 Kühe, ein Rind und ein Kalb, aber das allerliebste ist verschwunden, sodass ich keine Ruhe mehr finden kann. Ich muss waschen, backen, flicken, kochen, melken, kurz alles ist an mir. Meine Kinder tun was sie können, aber sind Kinder.

Wenn du kommen willst, so komme bald, wenn du kannst. Ich will noch warten mit dem Schreiben nach Deutschland nach Schaafheim bis ich wieder Antwort von dir habe. Ich denke ich weiß mehr von Schaafheim als du. Deinem Schreiben nach habe ich einen Fehler gemacht in diesem Schreiben. So nehme es nicht für übel, denn ich weiß es nicht. Ich bin so vergesslich und meine Frau tut mich nicht mehr erinnern. Ich kann nicht mehr schreiben. Das Herz wird mir zu schwer.

Ich tu mein Schreiben schließen mit vielen Grüßen von mir und meinen Kindern, die sagen der Onkel soll kommen, an dich und deine Frau und Kinder.

Noch etwas zu erinnern, dass wenn du kommen willst mit deiner Familie, so bringe dir das notwendige Kiefergeschirr mit. Ich glaube, dass du auch etwas verdienen kannst, denn es haben letztes Spätjahr schon etliche Mann gefragt, für Sauerkrautfässer und jetzt könntest du Eimer machen für das Zuckerwasser und auch Waschzuber (tragbares Gefäß für Flüssigkeiten) und noch allerlei.

Dear brother-in-law and sister-in-law,

I received you letter that you wrote on April 1^st on the 9^th and I have seen from it that you are still thinking about coming here to stay with us. As I wrote to you before, you are welcome. Maybe you can buy a piece of land from Hundsinger. 10 acres of it are clear (?) and I think you could get it for 300 and 250 dollars (250 to 300 dollars?). I you want to come I don’t advise you to but also not against it, but the city won’t be home for you. If you have 150 dollars you can buy it, the rest will be made on agreement/in installments, when time and circumstances allow it. You can come visit once. I allow/give you 5 dollars of my money. You can get here and go back in one week (probably stay for one week).

I would like to talk to you orally in regard to some circumstances. I received a letter from Ohio from Barbara Huber, née Senerdin, the same day I received yours and I enclose it here. Nothing has changed regarding money. If you can, please send me 10 dollars, but if you want to come or it is too hard for you, don’t send any until you do better. April 5^th I held an auction and sold 9 pieces of cuttle to be paid in 6 months. I earned good notes (banknotes?) for that of 124 dollars. Now I still have 2 oxen, 2 cows, one steer and a calf, but my favorite has disappeared, so that I can’t find peace anymore. I have to wash, bake, darn, cook, milk – short, everything is up to me. My children do whatever they can but they are still children.

If you want to come, come soon if you can. I want to wait with my letter to Germany to Schaafheim until I have a reply from you. I think I know more from Schaafheim than you do. According to your letter I made a mistake in this letter. Don’t hold it against me because I don’t know it. I am oblivious and my wife wouldn’t remind me anymore. I can’t continue writing. My heart sinks.

I close my letter with regards from me and my children, who say uncle shall come, to you and your wife and children.

Early reply. Not like always in six months. Another think to remind you of, bring your pine tools if you want to come with your family. I think you can earn something because last autumn a lot of men have been asking for sauerkraut barrels and now you could make buckets for the sugar water and washtubs and all sorts of things
