Lieber Schwager und Schwägerin!

Ich schicke dir hier 16 Taler als Draft, damit geh ans Erie Railroad Depot und frage, ob sie es nehmen oder nicht. Wenn sie es nicht nehmen, dann gib es dem Expressmann und lass es einsammeln oder einnehmen in Deutsch und dir das Geld zurückbringen, das ist alles was ich tun kann. Ich bin schon eine ganze Woche herumgelaufen, um Geld zu leihen, aber ich kann keines bekommen. Dann schicke ich dir 4 Taler in 2 Bilder (Stücken?), das ist alles Geld was ich bekommen kann.

Nun schreibe mir, ob ich eine Fuhre (Sendung) nach Webele schicken soll und welchen Tag. Schreibe sogleich als es sein kann wie du mit dem Draft zukommst. Wenn du nichts nicht tun kannst, so schicke es sogleich zurück, bevor ich es bezahlt haben muss. Diesen Draft nehme auf das Eisenbahn-Depot und erfrage, ob sie es nehmen. Wenn sie es nicht nehmen, dann gebe es zu dem Expressmann und lass es für dich einnehmen.

Weiter weiß ich nichts zu schreiben als wir sind alle gesund und erwarten dich bald.

English version:

Laporte, October 19^th, 1861

Dear brother-in-law and sister-in-law!

I hereby send you 16 thalers as a draft. With this go to the Erie Railroad Depot and ask if they accept it or not. If they wouldn’t take it, give it to the expressman and let it collect or take in in German (?) and bring back the money to you, this is all I can do. I have been running around the place to lend money, but I can’t get any. Also, I send you 4 thalers in 2 pieces, that is all I could get.

Now write to me if I should send the consignment to Webele and which day. Write immediately how you get along with the draft. If you can’t do anything, send it back directly before I will have paid for it. Take this draft to the railroad depot and ask if they accept it. If they don’t give it to the expressman and let take him for you.

I don’t know what else to write about than that we are all well and awaiting you soon.
