Lieber Schwager und Schwägerin,

ich wünsche euch ein glückliches neues Jahr. Ich muss dir schreiben, dass ich gestern, den 28^ten, einen Brief von der alten Mutter erhalten habe. Sie ist noch gesund aber gebrechlich. Sie könnte nichts mehr tun. Sie schreibt nur, sie wüsste gar nicht wo du wärest. Ich hatte geglaubt, du hättest ihr dieses Frühjahr eher geschrieben, aber es ist nicht wahr. Sie schreibt, es hätte sich gar niemand um sie bekümmert, dass Stofel täte gar nicht nach ihr sehen; die Maria in Frankfurt, die täte wie es sich gebähr (?).

Ich glaube, du kannst keinen Send (à evtl. sowas wie Zindel, Stoff aus dem Papier herstellbar ist) mehr nähen für Papier, sonst tätest du doch ein paar Zeilen schreiben; wenigstens an mich wie es dir geht, ob du noch am Leben bist oder im Krieg oder ob du Arbeit hast oder keine oder willst verheuern (verpachten, vermieten) gern oder einen Spitzbub machen, wie es in New York hergeht. Wer am besten betrügen und belügen kann der, ist ein schmutziger Mann. Kannst du nicht hierbei sehen, dass der Krieg eine Strafe von Gott ist und der Hochmut, Lug und Trug, Wucherei, Ehebrecherei, Hass, Neid und Meineid usw. – alles wird bestraft.

Ich will mein Schreiben schließen. Ich und mein kleiner Peter sind allein zu Haus. Die anderen sind in der Schule.

I think you can’t sew any ´send` (no translation found, word uncommon; meaning: material to make paper from) for paper, otherwise you would be writing a few lines; at least how you feel, if you are still alive or at war or if you have work or not or want to lease or be a villain as it is happens in New York. Who can betray and lie best is a dirty man. Can’t you see here that the war is a punishment from god and pride, lies and deception, loansharking, adultery, hatred, envy, perjury and so on – everything gets punished.

I want to close my letter. Me and my little Peter are alone at home. The others are at school.
