Lieber Schwager und Schwester,

wenn euch mein Schreiben antrifft wie es uns alle verlässt, dann soll es uns herzlich freuen. Euren Brief habe ich den 2^ten Juli richtig erhalten und aber keine erfreuliche Nachricht darin gesehen. Der Günther hatte es richtig ausgerichtet, dass euch eure drei Kinder gestorben sind. Wir nehmen auch sehr großen Anteil an diesem schmerzlichen Verlust, dass euch eure drei Kinder so schnell gestorben sind. Wir müssen uns alle damit trösten, was Gott tut, das ist wohl getan, da habt ihr drei Engel im Himmel, die werden euch dereinst mit Freuden antreffen, wenn ihr von dieser Welt scheidet.

Meine erste Neuigkeit und meine größte Freude, die ich noch erlebt habe, will ich euch jetzt schreiben. Wir haben nach dem 15^ten Jahr, dass wir verheiratet waren, im Jahr 1864 den 24^ten Juli einen jungen Sohn bekommen dessen Name heißt Nikolaus und im Jahr 1866 den 14^ten März eine junge Tochter deren Name heißt Katharina. Alle zwei Kinder sind noch frisch und gesund, mein Sohn ist den 24^ten Juli 2 Jahre alt gewesen, spricht aber schon mit dem größten Verstand alles. Sein Vetter ist Nikolaus Krause[…] III.

Lieber Schwager und Schwester, ich könnte euch noch viel schreiben, aber ich muss es kurz machen, denn unser deutsches Vaterland ist hart heimgesucht worden durch Krieg. Der König von Preußen ist unser Feind. Den 14^ten Juli war eine Schlacht bei Aschaffenburg, da sind unsere Landestruppen zurückgeschlagen worden und es sind viele Hessen Darmstädter gefallen. Da haben wir schon unsere notwendigen Sachen gepackt und glaubten wir müssten flüchten. Nach dem hat Preußen sich nach Frankfurt gewendet und hernach nach Darmstadt und haben da viele Sachen geplündert und fast geschafft. Vom 2^ten Juli bis heute haben sie im Bauland eine Schlacht geliefert. Da soll es dann sehr viel Menschenleben gekostet haben. Ich kann nicht weiter schreiben, denn ich habe keine Zeit. Ich könnte euch gar zu viel schreiben. Unsere Ernte ist der größte Teil zuhause. Morgens geschnitten, nachmittags nach Hause gefahren. Wenn wir auch alles zuhause haben, wissen wir noch nicht ob wir wirklich einen Nutzen davon haben.

Lieber Schwager und Schwester, deine Mutter ist noch bei Leben, aber sie kann nicht mehr so arbeiten wie laufen, denn sie ist jetzt alt und schwach. Dein Vermögen, das du noch zu bekommen hast, da kommst du nicht drum außer dass der Feind müsste es rauben. Wir haben bis daher noch keine Last gehabt vom Militär, wenn es nicht noch kommt. Bloß Heu und Brot und Hafer haben wir nach Aschaffenburg liefern müssen an die Preußen und acht Mann ver[…] seit schon acht Tagen fast.

Lieber Schager und Schwester, ich kann nicht weiter schreiben, denn ich habe gar keine Zeit. Ich denke vielleicht ändert es sich in 4 Monaten, da will ich euch wieder schreiben. Das könnte vielleicht noch der Fall sein, dass ich mich wirklich entschließe noch mit Frau und Kindern zu euch nach Amerika zu ziehen, aber kann man nichts verkaufen. Sobald es sich wieder ändert werde ich euch schreiben und alles erfragen was euer Wunsch ist. Lebet wohl und seid getrost. Vielleicht sprechen wir uns noch mündlich.

If my letter reaches you the way it leaves us, we will be heartily glad. I received you letter correctly July 2^nd but I didn’t read good news in it. Günther had told me correctly that your three children passed away. We sympathize with this hurtful loss and that your three children passed away so fast. We have to console with what God does, which is done well, so now you have three angels in heaven who will find you in joy once you leave this earth.

My first news and my biggest joy that I was able to experience I want to write about to you now. After 15 years of marriage on the 24^th of July, 1864 we had a young son named Nikolaus and on the 14^th of March, 1866 a young daughter whose name is Katharina. Both children are fresh and healthy, my son turned 2 July 24^th but he can say everything with reason. His name sake is Nikolaus […] III.

Dear brother-in-law and sister, I could write a lot but I need to keep it short because our German fatherland was ravaged badly by war. King of Prussia is our enemy. July 14^th there was a battle close to Aschaffenburg where they beat back our land troops and a lot of Hesse Darmstadts were killed in action. We had already packed all that is necessary and thought that we need to flee. After Prussia turned towards Frankfurt and after that towards Darmstadt and there they sacked a lot of things and almost made it. From July 2^nd until today they have had a battle in Bauland. They say it cost a lot of human lives. I can’t continue writing since I don’t have the time. I could write so much. Our crop is the biggest part at home. Cut in the morning, brought home in the afternoon. Even if we have everything at home we still wouldn’t know if we will benefit from it.

Dear brother-in-law and sister, you mother is still alive but she can’t work or walk that well anymore since she is old and weak now. Your assets that you are still about to receive is save as long as the enemy doesn’t rob it. So far, we didn’t have any burden through the military, when it is not about to still happen. We just had to bring hay and bread and oat to Aschaffenburg for the Prussian and eight men […] for eight days now already.

Dear brother-in-law and sister, I can’t keep writing because I haven’t any time. I think it may change in 4 months, I will write you then again. It might be that I will decide to move to America to you with my wife and children but one can’t sell anything. As soon as it changes I will write to you and ask about what your wish is. Fare well and take heart. Maybe we will have the chance to speak in person sometime.
