mit betrübtem Herzen ergreife ich das Bleistift, um euch ein paar Zeilen zu schreiben, nämlich ich bin in Blockfelds Island (?) (Rikers Island?), wenn ihr es noch nicht wisst und obgleich ihr mich verstoßen habt wie ich mir denke, so schreibe ich euch doch ein paar Zeilen. Ich bitte euch um Verzeihung. Ich will alles gut machen, wenn ich wieder hieraus komme. Hinaus komme ich den 14^ten April. Seid doch nur so gut und kommt einmal zu mir. Ich hab viel mit euch zu sprechen. Wenn ihr zu mir kommen wollt, so müsst ihr in die Bondstreet No 1, da bekommt ihr ein Ticket und am East River in der 26^ten Straße steigt ihr in das Schiff, das kostet 10 Cent, das will ich euch alles wiedergeben. Seien Sie deshalb so gut und sagen Sie dem Überbringer dieses Briefes, ob Sie kommen wollen oder nicht und wenn ein Brief von Deutschland gekommen ist, dann bringen Sie auch mit. Fragen Sie nur den Überbringer dieses, der wird Ihnen alles sagen wo Sie mich auffinden können. Kommen Sie nur einmal zu mir, auch bringen Sie mir einen Kamm mit.

With a sad heart I grab hand of the pencil to write a few lines to you. I am in Blockfelds Island (maybe Rikers Island; probably jail) just in case you don’t know yet and although you have probably repudiated me as I can imagine I still write you a few lines. I ask for forgiveness. I want to compensate for everything, once I am out of here. I will be out of here April 14^th. Be so kind and visit me once. I have a lot to talk to you about. If you want to come here you need to get to Bondstreet No 1, there you will get a ticket and at the East River in the 26^th street you enter the ship which is 10 cents, I will give it all back to you. Be so kind and tell the bearer of this letter if you would like to come or not and if there is a letter from Germany take it with you. Ask the bearer he will tell you everything about how to find me. Just visit me once and bring me a comb.
