Lieber Schwager und Schwester,

wenn euch mein Schreiben antrifft wie es uns verlässt, dann soll es uns herzlich freuen. Wir warten jetzt schon zwei Jahre, haben noch keine Antwort auf unser Schreiben bekommen, was uns alle sehr großes Anliegen macht, weil bei uns sehr schlimm gesprochen wird von dem Krieg, der in Amerika ist.

Ich und die Großmutter bitten euch um Gottes Willen, schreibt uns doch Antwort wie es bei euch steht, ob ihr auch teilhabt an diesem schlimmen Gemetzel. Wir lesen in der Zeitung, dass der Krieg schon gar zu viel Menschenleben gekostet hat.

Ich denke doch ganz gewiss, dass unser Schreiben richtig angekommen ist. Ich weiß aber gar nicht warum ihr gar nichts mehr zurückschreibt, wo wir doch schon jahrelang jeden Posttag auf Antwort warten.

Lieber Schwager und Schwester, wir bitten euch nochmals insgesamt, schreibt uns doch Antwort. Wir denken und sprechen jeden Tag von euch wie es bei euch sein werde, ob nicht vielleicht der liebe Sohn von der Mutter und dem Schwager von uns in diesem Kriege totgeschossen sei. Wenn ihr wisst wie groß unsere Sorge um euch wäre und wie uns so mehr im Herzen fühlt, so wäret ihr uns gewiss nicht länger warten lassen. _________.

Lieber Schwager, deine Mutter hat schon mehrmals bitterlich bei mir geweint und hat erst vor ungefähr sechs Wochen einen Brief von der Dorothea ihrem Mann erhalten, dass sie gestorben sei. Nehmt doch der Mutter ihren Kummer ab und lasst sie doch noch wissen wie es bei euch steht. Noch will ich euch eine kleine Neuigkeit schreiben, dass sich die kleine Katharina verheiratet hat mit dem Valtin (kurz für Valentin) Diehl. Er war aber ein Wittwer, das ist ein Sohn von Peter Diehl. Weiter weiß ich nichts zu schreiben. Viele Grüße von uns allen.

Me and grandmother ask you for God’s sake, send us an answer and write how you are doing, if you partake in the terrible butchering. We read in the newspaper that the war had cost way too many human lives so far.

I think for sure that our letter arrived correctly. But I don’t know at all why you aren’t writing back as we have been waiting each and every post day for years now.

Dear brother-in-law and sister, we ask you again overall, write us an answer. Every day we think and speak of you, how it may be with you, if the beloved son of mother and brother-in-law may be shot to death in this war. If you knew how much we worry and how we feel in our hearts, you wouldn’t keep us waiting. _________.

Dear brother-in-law, your mother has been crying bitterly oftentimes in my presence and she received a letter from Dorothea’s husband 6 weeks ago saying that she passed away. Take away mother’s sorrow and let her know how you are doing. Also, I want to write you some news that small Katharina got married to Valtin (short for Valentin) Diehl. But he was a widower, he is a son of Peter Diehl. I don’t know any more to write about. Greetings from us all.
