The material and pictures in this summary was organized and contributed by the Reverend James J. Ruddick, SJ, who was retired from the faculty at Canisius College in Buffalo, NY. Father Ruddick was related to the Litzelman, Sick, Sweeney and Kelly families of Sullivan County tradition. He died on March 18, 2007. Father Ruddick's mother was Mary Litzelman Ruddick. Her mother was Mary Sick Litzelman, a daughter of Francis Charles Sick. Mary's youngest sibling included William Sick, born 11/28/1863 in Cherry Mills, PA. William Sick married Catherine Mary (Katie) Kelly whose youngest sister, Agnes Elizabeth Kelly, married Bob Sweeney's grandfather, Peter Francis Sweeney. William Sick had a son named Stephen Sick who was first cousin to Father Ruddick's mother.

Mathias LITZELMAN and Maria Eva PAULIN were married on Aug 23, 1762 in Haguenau, Alsace. Maria Eva PAULIN (daughter of John PAUL and Barbara PAULIN) was born in 1742. Mathias LITZELMAN and Maria Eva PAULIN had the following children:

A. Hermann Joseph LITZELMAN was born in 1766.

B. John George LITZELMAN was born on Feb 7, 1768 in Haguenau, Alsace. He was baptized on Feb 8, 1768 in Haguenau, Alsace. He died on Dec 4, 1805 in Hagenau, Alsace. He was an a grocer in Haguenau and is also described as a potter.[2]

John George LITZELMAN and Maria Elisabeth DECKER were married on Nov 8, 1790 in Haguenau, Alsace. Maria Elisabeth DECKER (daughter of John George DECKER and Maria Eva DEISSIN) was born about 1758. In a notebook (presumably written by her daughter-in-law, Mary Ann Jenny Litzelman) she is said to have died in "her 90th year" on 8 Mar 1848. She died on Mar 8, 1848 in Cherry Township, Sullivan Co, PA. John George LITZELMAN and Maria Elisabeth DECKER had the following children:

1. Hermann George LITZELMAN was born on Sep 19, 1792 in Haguenau, Alsace. He was baptized on Sep 19, 1792 in Haguenau, Alsace. The baptismal record lists his uncle, Herman Joseph Litzelman, and his mother's sister, Marie Catharine Decker, as his godparents. He died on Jun 5, 1803.

2. Joseph LITZELMAN was born on Mar 13, 1795 in Renchen, near Baden, Germany. Joseph was born in Renchen, Baden (about 19 miles from Haguenau). The family had lived there for five months. He died in 1850. Joseph Litzelman died when his son Anthony was 16 years of age. After the death of his first wife (Frances Griner), he apparently married again. His son Anthony lived with "his step-mother" until he married Josephine Boos in 1858. Note that Joseph Litzelman was born in Renchen, Baden, some 19 miles from Haguenau Alsace. The family had been living there for five months. His father (John George Litzelman) was not present for his baptism. Joseph Litzelman came to the Port of Baltimore from Europe. (Some of the Indianapolis Litzelmans "have the manifest" of the ship that deposited "two sibling" children of John George Litzelman and Elizabeth Decker Litzelman in Baltimore. This meant Joseph and apparently another son/daughter of J.G.L). From there Joseph and his family went to Indiana and Illinois. Contact with his brother's family, the Mathias Litzelman family, (who came to New York City and then to northern Pennsylvania) was lost for several generations, - having been reestablished only in the 1990s and confirmed in the spring of 1999 by records going back to Jacob Litzelman. (This work was done by a study of the LDS records in Salt Lake City by Fr. Paul J. McCarthy, SJ, a friend and colleague of Fr. James J. Ruddick, SJ [great-grandson of Mathias Litzelman].)

Joseph LITZELMAN and Frances GRINER were married on Jul 29, 1830 in Haguenau, Alsace. Frances GRINER (daughter of Ignace GRINER and Francoise GRUSENMOYER) was born on May 30, 1809. She immigrated in 1834. She died about 1835. Frances Litzelman died after the move to the U.S. in 1834. Joseph LITZELMAN and Frances GRINER had the following children:

a. George LITZELMAN was born in 1831.

b. Frances LITZELMAN was born in 1833.

c. Anthony LITZELMAN was born on Nov 22, 1834 in Haguenau, Alsace. He died in Jun 1917. Anthony Litzelman lived with his step-mother from the death of his father Joseph until he himself married Josephine in 1858.

Anthony LITZELMAN and Josephine BOOS were married in 1858. Josephine BOOS was born in 1840. She died in 1879. Anthony LITZELMAN and Josephine BOOS had the following children:

i. Elizabeth LITZELMAN was born about 1860.

ii. Charles LITZELMAN was born on Jul 31, 1863 in Ste. Marie, IL. He died on Jul 28, 1946.

Charles LITZELMAN and Matilda LAMOTTE were married on Nov 3, 1885. Matilda LAMOTTE (daughter of Charles LAMOTTE and Josephine LECLAIR) was born on Feb 2, 1867 in St. Francisville, IL. She died on Sep 25, 1937. Charles LITZELMAN and Matilda LAMOTTE had the following children:

(1) Cletus Alfred LITZELMAN was born on Nov 21, 1886 in Ste. Marie, IL. He died before 1999.

Matthias and Mary Ann Litzelman and their first four children (Matthias, Anna, Elizabeth, and Theresa) went to Le Havre, France, where they boarded the SS Huntress on July 24, 1827 and sailed for America. After 42 days on the ocean they arrived in New York City on Sept. 6, 1827. They remained there for about two years their daughter Magdalena was born there.

In 1829 they arrived in Dushore, PA (Cherry Township) and purchased 100 acres of land to start the family farm which four generations of the Litzelman family farmed until it was sold in 1969.

The SS Huntress was an American 3-masted sailing ship with two decks. She was 110 ft long, 28 ft wide, had a depth of 14 ft, and weighed 395 tons. It was built in Boston, MA in 1811.

The Litzelmans were among the first pioneer settlers of Sullivan County. The 1840 census lists 13 persons in Matthias' household, which included his mother, Elizabeth, who died there at the age of 90. She apparently came to America sometime after 1827, at a date which cannot be determined.

When the eldest son, Matthias, born in 1822, was old enough to help on the farm, it was said that each autumn Matthias would walk from Dushore to New York City (abt. 200 mi.) and work there until spring, then walk back to Dushore.

His wife Mary often walked to Towanda, PA (a round trip of about 48 miles) to sell farm

products. Their son Joseph, born in 1835, was the last child born in the log house.

Mathias LITZELMAN and Mary Ann JENNY were married on Dec 13, 1821 in Hirsingue, Upper Alsace. Apparently Mathias moved from Heguenau to Hirsingue and there met Mary Ann Jenny. They married and she bore their first four children there. Mary Ann JENNY (daughter of Joseph JENNI and Margueritte FEHR) was born on Mar 26, 1802. She died on Dec 10, 1890. The name Jenny is pronounced in English as "Yenny" and was occasionally spelled "Yenni" by members of the family. Mathias LITZELMAN and Mary Ann JENNY had the following children:

a. Mathias (Matt) LITZELMAN was born on Jan 11, 1822 in Hirsingue, Upper Alsace, France. Birthplace of Mathias (Matt) Litzelman is given as Hirsingen, Upper Alsace, France. The town is also known as Hirsingue. (On the map, near Basel) Apparently, the town was known by slightly different names when under French and under German control.

Mathias (Matt) LITZELMAN and Barbara BAUMGARTNER were married about 1850. Barbara BAUMGARTNER (daughter of Joseph BAUMGARTNER and Maria Ursula KANI) was born on Feb 3, 1825 in Nieder-Eichsel, Baden. The name is spelled variously: Baumgarter, Bumgarter, Baumgartner, Bumgartner, Bumgardner. Barbara's birthdate is also given as MAR 3, 1825. Mathias (Matt) LITZELMAN and Barbara BAUMGARTNER had the following children:

Mary Emily Litzelman married Henry Kraus, b.1867 d. 1932. They were married in 1886 in Elmira, NY. Henry Kraus was brother to Conrad Kraus, b. 1858 d. 1900, who was Associate Judge of Sullivan County in 1896. Their father was Henry Kraus b. 1825 from Alsace. He married Anna Catherine Blumenstein from Germany. She was b. 1835 d. 1896. They were married in 1849 in Tamaqua, PA. There were five children: Conrad, Elizabeth, William, Henry and Sophia.

Henry Kraus and Mary Emily Litzelman settled in Eagles Mere and these are their children:

Some Anecdotes from Kathi:

I know my grandmother, Henrietta Kraus Welch, grew up on a farm. She said so and told me she had no shoes in the summer. I remember that it was Easter one year and I wanted a baby duckie sooo bad. She told me when she was a very little girl the ducks had baby duckies on the farm. She loved them so much and they were so soft she hugged them and squeezed them all to death. I guess she was in a lot of trouble after that!
My grandmother also went through the Great Depression. She lived in Broome County at the time with her husband. She had her oldest son in 1924 and the next son, John Henry was born in 1926. My dad Donald Francis and my Aunt were both born in February 1931. My grandma told me that they were so small she didn't think they would live, so she filled Mason jars with hot water wrapped in towels and put them around the babies to keep them warm. She apparnetly did have one baby before the rest. I think her name was Joan Welch. She died but I'm not sure if she was stillborn or died a bit later. I haven't found any records for that baby.
After Grandpa Welch died in 1939, my dad's oldest brother joined the military during WWII. He was gone a couple of years and returned and worked at IBM where he met his current wife. Uncle Jack, now deceased, joined the Navy after his older brother returned and then he was off to war for a couple of years.
I'm not sure if this was during the Depression or the war, but my dad told me that he and my aunt would take their wagon to get a bag of flour for Grammy. When they got it home, they would have to sift the bugs out so they could use it.
After dad graduated, he went to Uncle Gerly's (Gerald, Grammy's brother) farm and worked at the sawmill. He sawed his pinky off by accident and lost his graduation ring. The saw cut it off too. This was somewhere in Sullivan County, maybe in the Muncy Valley area. He used to go up Dutch Mountain with his cousins, Uncle Gerly's kids. He told me there was a hermit up Dutch Mountain, one of the Krauses, I believe, to whom we are related by descent.
There are some Krauses buried in Peace Cemetery, Cherry Township, Sullivan County, PA. Henry and Anna Catherine Kraus would be my grandma Henrietta's grandparents. The lone "Henry" (Henry G. Kraus) would be Henrietta's father.
My grandma always said she was from Eaglesmere, but I will find the exact house for you. I think it still stands. I was there when I was little. My dad took her down to see it. I was too young to remember exactly where it is. But I will find out.

                                m. Raphael ("Ralph") Leo LITZELMAN was born on Mar 13, 1844 in Cherry Township, PA. He died in May 1940 in Cherry Township, PA. Raphael Litzelman remained on the farm his father started in 1829. He walked to Towanda, PA and carried an iron plow back to his farm. This was said to be the first or one of the first iron plows in the area.

                                He worked in the fields until he was 88 years old. He continued to walk to Dushore, about 8 miles round trip, and would occasionally play the fiddle and dance a jig for his Taylor grandchildren in front of their German St. home. He was the lastg survivor of a family of 14 children.

                                Raphael ("Ralph") Leo LITZELMAN and Lydia SICK were married in 1868. Lydia SICK (daughter of Francis Charles (called Franz) SICK and Hannah ("Johana") REINFRIED) was born on Jan 22, 1848. Her tombstone in the St. Basil the Great cemetery in Dushore seems to read that she was born in 1826. She died on Jan 7, 1929. Lydia's gravemarker in the St. Basil the Great cemetery is not clear: The year of death may be 1926 Lydia Sick Litzelman's date of birth is given on her tombstone as 1848. Raphael ("Ralph") Leo LITZELMAN and Lydia SICK had the following children:

George A. Litzelman, 81, of Dushore died March 19, 1989, at his home. He was born on May 28, 1907, in Cherry Township, a son of Mathias and Josephine Marshall Litzelman.
A lifelong resident of Sullivan County, he was a farmer and for 25 years owned and operated the GLF Mill in Dushore (now Agway). He was a member of St. Basil’s Roman Catholic Church, Dushore, and its Holy Name Society.
Surviving are his wife, the former Loretta Pritchard, whom he married April 27, 1931; five sons, George of Bryceville, FL; Gerald Of Orange Park, FL; Bernard, Donald and Gordon, all of Dushore; two daughters, Mrs. May Jane Trasco of Dushore and Mrs. Marlene Pardoe of Forksville; brothers Paul and Charles, both of Dushore; and a sister, Mrs. Vernon (Helen) Broschart of Dushore; 21 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. Marie Broschart in 1973; a sister Lydia (sister Emily I.H.M.) in 1974; and brothers, Leo in 1968 and Francis in 1977.
Funeral services were held yesterday at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, Dushore, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Basil’s Church. Rev. Patrick J. McLaughlin officiated. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

                                                George A. LITZELMAN and Loretta PRICHARD were married on Apr 27, 1931. Loretta PRICHARD was born in Stroudsburg, PA on February 28, 1914 and died March 5, 2009 at age 95. She was the daughter of Oren and Almeda (Shaffer) Prichard. Loretta was raised by her grandparents, who had a farm across from the Litzelman farm in Cherry Township, PA.

Mrs. Loretta Litzelman, age 95, wife of the late George Litzelman, of Dushore, Pa., passed away Thursday, March 5, 2009, at the Dar-Way Elder Care in Estella, Pa.
Loretta was born in Stroudsburg, Pa., on Feb. 28, 1914, daughter of the late Oren and Almeda Shaffer Prichard. She was raised by her grandparents, who had a farm across from the Litzelman farm in Cherry Township.
She married George A. Litzelman of Dushore, on April 27, 1931. George predeceased her on March 19, 1989, after 57 years of marriage.
She was a homemaker and loved knitting and making crafts and made many doll babies over the years. She enjoyed keeping exotic birds and pets.
Loretta was a member of St. Basil's Catholic Church in Dushore and a member of its Altar and Rosary Society.
Surviving are; four sons, Gerald (Lois) Litzelman of Orange Park, Fla., Bernard (Elaine) Litzelman of Dushore, Donald (Shirley) Litzelman of Dushore and Gordon (Sandy) Litzelman of Dushore; daughters Mary Jane Trasco of Dushore and Marlene Pardoe of Forksville, Pa.; a son-in-law, Carl Joseph Broschart of Dushore; a sister-in-law, Ann Litzelman of Bryceville, Fla.; 21 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and 16 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Marie J. Broschart; on Sept. 11, 1973; a son, George Litzelman, on March 3, 2008; a sister, Iva Carson; and a great-grandson, Maximus Litzelman, on Feb. 11, 2008.
A Transferal Service will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, March 9, at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore, and will be followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at St. Basil's Church, Dushore, with the Rev. Joseph R. Hornick, her pastor, presiding. Interment will be in St. Basil's Cemetery.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Homer Funeral Home.
Members of St. Basil's – St. Francis Altar and Rosary Society will recite the Rosary at 3 p.m. on Sunday afternoon at the funeral home.

                                        She was widowed in 1937, in the depths of the great depression, with four children still in grade and high school.

                                        The Hannah L. Taylor Memorial Award was established in 1982 in her honor at the Sullivan County High School. It is awarded annually to the winner of the senior class essay contest.

                                        The Litzelmans had a distillery as did other pioneers to prevent the loss of grain from deterioration and vermin. Early settlers made whiskey for bartering, cash, and for medicinal purposes. Hannah delighted in describing the responsibility and excitement of her role as a "lookout" for strangers as early as the tender age of 5 (1890) on days when they would operate the distillery.

                                n. John L. LITZELMAN was born on Oct 24, 1846 in Cherry Township PA. John Litzelman's gravemarker gives him the middle initial "L." In a notebook written by his mother, Mary Ann Litzelman, his middle name is given as "Laglitz" (difficult to decipher from the Schrift handwriting). A genealogist friend of Bob Sweeney comments that the final "itz" indicates a prussian/polish background, and thus points to Ostpreussen. He has seen many references to "Langlitz" possibly that is the name. A careful exam of the original writing seems not to show an "n", but then the handwriting is not in standard orthography. It is to be noted that one of the Sick family ancestors is said to have come from Prussia. He died on Apr 29, 1925 in Cherry Township PA. According to Thomas J. Ingham's "History of Sullivan County" (1899) John Litzelman was married to Mary Sick on Nov. 7, 1853, . Ingham says "1853" but that is manifestly incorrect, for John Litzelman was born in 1847. The newspaper report of the golden wedding celebration states that it was held on Wednesday, Sept. 12, 1922. Hence, the wedding was almost certainly on Sept. 12, 1872.

                                                John purchased the Barth homestead, 279 acres on Gainer Hill Rd, at the top of Gainer Hill. (In 2006 the property was owned by Kaufman Transmission.)

He died shortly after arriving home from a tournament, -- apparently from an unexpected heart attack. For some years in the 1930s and 1940s he was the elected Burgess of Towanda, PA. He had earned his living as a barber in Towanda. His training in that field was done in the village of Gardenville, adjacent to Buffalo, NY.

                                        Eva CEDERBORG was born on Apr 7, 1894. She died on Dec 11, 1986 in Laporte, PA. Eva Cederborg continued to live in the family home in Towanda for some years after her husband died. She then went to a senior residence in the north end of Towanda. Later she went to a nursing home in Laporte, where she died in 1986. Helen Ruddick Bentley was the executor of her estate. She had looked after Eva's interests for some years before Eva died. Her mother ("Mrs. Cederborg") had died a few years earlier at the age of about 102 and was buried in the Catholic cemetery in Overton, PA near New Albany.

                                        xi. Jennie LITZELMAN was born about 1893. She graduated in 1911 in St. Basil's High School in Dushore, PA. She died c1912 in Dushore, PA.

                                        xii. Elizabeth (Lizzie) LITZELMAN was born on Apr 2, 1895. She died on Apr 2, 1978 in Dushore, PA.

                                        Joseph B FINAN was born on May 30. He died in 1974. Elizabeth (Lizzie) LITZELMAN and Joseph B FINAN had the following children:

                                                (1) Dolores FINAN was born on Nov 9, 1925 in New Albany, Bradford Co., PA.

                                                John Michael JERKES was born on Jan 1, 1922 and died May 12, 2009. [see obituary below] Dolores FINAN and John Michael JERKES had the following children:

                                                        Mary-Rose JERKES and Robert BERFIELD were married on Jun 14, 1975.   Mary-Rose JERKES and Robert BERFIELD had the following children:

                                                        (b) Raymond JERKES was born on Dec 26, 1953 in Dushore, PA.

John Michael Jerkes, age 87, of Dushore, PA passed away on Tuesday, May 12, 2009 at the Highlands Care Center in Laporte, PA.
John was born on January 1, 1922 in Johnstown, PA.
Surviving: Spouse; Mary Dolores, Son; Raymond Jerkes; Daughter; Mary Rose (Robert) Berfield; grandchildren; Keith Berfield, Janine Berfield and Zachary Jerkes; great-grandson; Logan Berfield.
Funeral Services were held on Saturday, May 16, 2009 from the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore, PA and was followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Basil’s Church, Dushore, PA with the Rev. Joseph R. Hornick, his pastor, presiding.
