Note 12  The Sullivan Review

September 13, 1933

Ottertail, July 12 - Martin Epler was born at Lancaster, Pa., Jan. 21, 1859.  He was married to Caroline Nevil in 1878.  In 1895 he came to Otter Tail County, Minnesota where he bought his first farm in section 22 of Ottertail Township, where he and his wife lived near the beautiful shores of Otter Tail Lake for almost fifteen years.

In 1909 he rented the old home farm and went to Montana, settling at or near Craig, where he purchased a cattle ranch of some eight hundred acres.  There he enjoyed the life of a cattle rancher for some six years.  In 1915 he sold out the ranch in Montana and moved back to this county, settling in Otter Tail where he built a nice home and where he and his wife resided until 1927 when he made his last move out west to the state of Oregon where he bought a new home in the city of Medford.

May 26 he was stricken with apoplexy.  He lay in a state of unconsciousness most of the time, with two doctors and two nurses attending him.  He passed away Friday evening, June 30, at 8:30 p.m. at the age of 74 years, 5 months and 9 days.  He leaves to mourn his wife Caroline, who has been his faithful wife and helpmate, all these years.  Also the following sisters and brother:  Mrs. Annie Shrimp, Dushore; Samuel Epler, New Albany; Mrs. Lizzie VanHorn, Mrs. Emma Bahr of Cherry township.

The remains were brought here from Medford and interment was in the Ottertail cemetery, the funeral taking place Saturday, Lester Whiting who was in charge read the above brief history of his life and gave a prayer.  Mrs. Alvin L. Schultz, Mrs. Lloyd

Schultz, Geo. Schultz and Walter Brutlag as a quartet sang “Nearer My God to Thee.” Those from a distance who attended were Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Rieman, Mr. S.B. Irwin and daughters Frances and Carrie, all of Fergus Falls, Judge and Mrs. Anton Thompson and son Owen of Henning, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Parker of Girard.  The pallbearers were Henry a. Schultz, G.A. Schultz, Wm. Burmeister, S.B. Barnett, Henry Jones, and Mert Barber.

Deceased had many friends here.  He never had any children of his own and yet one remembers seeing all the little boys in the village accompanying him to the train when leaving after a visit here.  A great sportsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially fishing in winter and he would fish in every kind of weather.

Sympathy is extended to Mrs. Epler, who after a visit with friends here expects to visit in Montana before returning to her home at Medford.

Note 13  The Sullivan Review

September 1, 1904, Thursday

As a result of a shooting affray on Railroad Street, in this place, on Sunday evening [August 28] about nine o’clock, Jacob Epler is dead.

Gertrude, the divorced wife of Samuel Epler, is shot through the leg, and Frank Yanney is confined in the county jail charged with murder.  Some years ago Gertrude Stahl, a foster daughter of Henry Stahl, was married to Samuel Epler; the couple lived happily for a time, when Frank Yanney appeared on the scene, and Mrs. Epler appeared to prefer him to her lawful spouse.  The couple was, we believe, divorced and remarried, and then Epler again applied for a divorce.  The woman has for some time been living with Yanney about three miles from Dushore, and a ten month old child went through the fracas with her Sunday evening without a scratch.

Yanney and the woman went on the excursion to Harvey’s Lake Sunday, and Samuel Epler and his brother Jacob also went.  It appears that the parties had met and quarreled at the lake, and that the quarrel was continued on the train, and that promises had been made on both sides to settle the affair when Dushore was reached.  It is but fair to the murdered man to state that he had generally acted in the capacity of peacemaker and had repeatedly besought his brother to have no trouble with Yanney.  They were but a few rods from the station when it is alleged the woman remarked that if they were ever going to settle the matter it was time they begun.  Yanney and Jacob Epler pulled their coats and started toward each other.  Immediately there were a number of shots fired, the woman sprang between them, and Epler fell to the ground.  He got up and walked a few rods farther and again fell into the ditch.  His friends got a cot and carried him to Dr. Randall’s office where an examination showed that he was shot through the abdomen, the ball entering low down and ranging downward.  The doctor was unable to find the ball, and the man was finally removed to the home of Warden Bahr, a brother-in-law, who lives about a mile from town.  He died about nine o’clock the next morning.

The woman was taken to Dr. Herrmann’s office, and an examination showed that she was shot through the thigh, the ball going clear through.

Yanney was taken into custody.  Taken before J.H. Bohn, Esq; and remanded to jail without bail.  He was immediately taken to Laporte and placed in a cell.

After Jacob Epler’s death Coroner McHenry empanelled a jury and held a post mortem.  It was discovered that the bullet had ranged across the abdomen from left to right, struck the hip bone and glanced back, crossing the abdominal cavity twice and completely riddling the entrails.  The man was beyond earthly help when the trigger was pulled.  The jury consists of Ira Cott, Lincoln Cox, Frank Cox, B.P. Hunsinger, Wellington Graifly, William Fairchild, and they adjourned until Thursday evening at eight o’clock, when the hearing will be resumed.

The funeral of Jacob Epler was held Wednesday [ August 31]afternoon at the Evangelical church, and the interment was made at Bahr’s Hill.  Deceased was about thirty years of age, unmarried and was known as a quiet, hardworking and peaceable young man.  He was a son of D.K. Epler, of Forks Township.
