The Cummiskey family emigrated from County Monaghan, a landlocked county in north central Ireland, in the early 1800s. They came from the Parish of Aughnamullen to the wilds of northern Pennsylvania when it was but one generation removed from complete wilderness. The Cummiskey family settled in and around what became known as the town of Wilmot, but was periodically and often referred to as "Cummiskey" after its original settlers.

In the following genealogy chart, we have boldfaced the specific ancestry that leads to James Michael Sheehan, our contributor, although there were and are many branches of Cummiskey down through the last 150 years. ** Editor's Note: In March 2008, we received the following message from Michelle Flehmer of Rogersville, MO. With her help, we have begun to update this page with her family history, and we are grateful for her information:

I am a descendant of the Cummiskey's; however, my family was not listed on this family tree. My great-great grandmother was Theresa Cummiskey who married Andrew McGinnis, as shown above. Moreover, Andrew was an Irish prize fighter and Theresa traveled on that circuit with him until they reached Missouri and settled there. They actually had 11 children; however, you only have my great-great-aunt Maggie listed under their names. My great-grandfather was Hugh McGinnis, who was a middle child in the family. My Grandpa Hugh McGinnis farmed and raised two children, Ralph and LoAnna McGinnis (my grandmother) on the McGinnis homestead until the time of his death. My Grandpa Flehmer, LoAnna's husband, and my dad and uncle helped farm the land with Grandpa McGinnis. After his death, we continued to farm the ground and my cousin now lives in the farmhouse. We do not have contact with the other McGinnis relatives. My grandmother had contact with some of the relatives in Kansas City, but we lost touch with them after her death. I would be more than willing to send you the names of Theresa's children if you are interested.
There were 8 living children, according to census records from 1900, but it states that Great-Grandma had 11 children. My dad said he remembered Grandpa McGinnis telling him once that he had siblings that died. The McGinnis family plot is in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Pierce City, MO; however, it is marked with only a family grave stone and no individual markers. We are going to request that the church look through records and see who is buried in the plot. I will send you the names of their other children as soon as I can. I'm going home this next weekend to my mom and dad's and I'm going to sort through family pictures to scan and send to you. I know that we have many pictures that would be interesting for the website. I'm sorry that the family tree is so rough right now. I just started researching our family tree so it's a work in progress. I hope what I have helps the website! Thanks for letting me contribute.
