THE DESCENDANTS OF ISAAC T. SONES

Teresa Porter is married to a blood descendant of the great Sones family of Sullivan County, PA. Her husband Ronald Dale Porter, Jr. is the great-great grandson of Isaac T. Sones and a great-grandson of Joshuay Bougart Sones, born November 15, 1849, who will figure prominently in our story. Teresa is an avid historian of the Sones family and the history of the Sonestown, PA area, which George Washington Sones, the father of Isaac T. Sones, founded in 1804. She is responsible for collecting and organizing the text and pictures used here. In doing so, she has relied upon information from other sources about the lives of the Sones family who emigrated from Pennsylvania to Nebraska in the 1800s. Her sources include a cousin, Kathleen Sones, and a book on the Sones family in Nebraska, issued in March 1991 by Georgene Morris Sones (Mrs. Doyle W. Sones) of 12224 Franklin Circle, Omaha, NE 68154. The book's title is Johann Philip Sones and His Wife Anna Barbara Kern.

We are very appreciative of these sources for their assistance and contributions to this story. There are also other sources of information on this site that may be useful in providing a historical and family context. They include A Pictorial Legacy of Sonestown and Settlers XVIII: The Sones, Simmons and Stevenson Families: Elders, Patriots and Lumber Barons. Actually, the story we will tell here encompasses another tradition, that of the farmer and homesteader, a history also relevant and significant to the development of our country as we know it today.

Although it is posted elsewhere on the Sullivan County Genealogical Web Project pages, let's take one more look at the ascending Sones lineage that we will be discussing in this story:

Ronald Dale Porter, Jr, husband of our contributor

Ronald Dale Porter, Sr., b. March 20, 1934

Elsie Lura Sones, b.Dec.17, 1894

Joshuay Bougart Sones, b. Nov. 15, 1849

Isaac T. Sones, b. ca. 1821

George W. Sones, b. Nov. 1783, founder of Sonestown

Johann Peter Sones (Sohns), b. Nov. 23, 1755, Revolutionary War vet

Johann Philip Nicolaus (Sohns) Sones, b. ca. 1720, husband of Anna Barbara Kern; he is the immigrant and is buried at Moselem Lutheran Cemetery, Moselem Springs, Berk County, PA.

Johan Methes (Sohns) Sones, b. ca. 1678 or 1668-1697, husband of Anna Elizabeth _______?, never left Germany

We have bolded the names of Isaac and Joshuay above because we plan to focus on that period of Sones history and descendants thereafter who relocated from Sullivan County to Nebraska, Iowa and California. We will also talk about Joshuay's older brother Edmund Jefferson Sones, who remained in Pa, but removed to Columbia County. Notice that the original name was spelled "Sohns". "Johan Methes Sohns" and "Johann Philip Nicolaus Sohns" are the proper order of the full names. It seems that the conversion to using "Sones" came about during the life of Johann Peter, who was born and raised in North America. Teresa Porter quotes a professor Kepler Sones, Ph.D., of Penn State University as follows:

There were many Germans coming to Pennsylvania in the early 1700's to take advantage of William Penn's offer of land and religious toleration. The colony was predominantly English, but the number of Germans threatened to flood the population with German speaking people. It is possible that Johann Peter changed the name to a more English sounding one in order to be more accepted in an English colony and to show his support for the new nation since he fought in the American revolution. About 1678 Johann Matthes Sohns was born in Germany. His wife was Anna Elizabeth? They had two children, Maria Catharina Sohns born about 1700 in Birkenfeld, Oldenberg, Germany; and Johann Phillip Nicolaus Sohns who became the founder of many of the Sohns/Sones in North America.

Another convention that we should mention is the distinction between "call names" and "legal names". If the father's name was 'John or Johann', all the sons were given that name in front of their "call' name. So, for example, Philip may have been a man's call name, but his legal name would have been Johann Philip. If he had a brother named Peter, then Peter's legal name would have been Johann Peter. This convention disappeared after a generation or two in the New World, but it can lead to some confusion in tracing siblings who appear to have had the same first name.

Johann Peter Sones was the first member of this family known to have moved into Northern Pennsylvania. He obtained land in the part of Northumberland County from which Lycoming County was formed in 1795. Many of his descendants came to live in other counties formed from this northern wilderness: Centre County, formed in 1800; Union and Columbia Counties, formed in 1813; and, later, Sullivan County, formed from Lycoming County in 1847. His land acquisitions came in the form of land grants, since he was a Revolutionary War veteran. On March 8, 1793, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania awarded him grant #S783 for 296+ acres on the south side of Muncy Creek, adjoining the lands of Adam Beaver, Daniel and Joseph Hill, and Joseph Litchard. This land was along Sick Run in what is now Lycoming County. On January 18, 1794 and again in 1814, Johann Peter received additional grants of 234 and 75 acres, respectively, both grants adjoining his original land in this area.

The 1830 Federal census places "Peter" Sones in Moreland Township, Lycoming County, living with his wife and two chldren, one of each gender. His wife is apparently older than Peter, since she is grouped in the "80-90 years of age" group while he is in the "70-80 years of age" group. In fact, he was 75 in that year. The son is aged between 15 and 20 and the daughter between 10 and 15. Names of dependents were not requested for the Census at that time.

On October 6, 1832, Peter applied for a pension as a Revolutionary War veteran (Record # 23934). Peter asserted that he enlisted in 1776 in the company of Captain Jacob Mouser, under Colonel Lutz as commander of the "Flying Camp". In his own handwriting, he wrote that he "was enlisted at my Father's house in Richmond Township in Berks County in Pennsylvania". The unit formed up at the tavern of Daniel Levan in Maxatawney Township, then marched in turn to Bethlehem, then Easton, in PA; on through Amboy, NJ; and eventually to New York City. After the Battle of Long Island, his unit served under George Washington in New York. Peter became sick just eight days before the end of his enlistment, but was allowed to go home anyhow. He re-enlisted in the fall of 1777 for another six months. He was sent off with a team under a wagon master named Kepner and crossed the Delaware River at Easton, PA. He served there, and also in Amboy and elsewhere. After this enlistment period, he was subsequently drafted and served as a guard of the public stores at Reading, PA. Joseph Litchard and John Beaver of Muncy Creek Township both vouched for Peter's military service, Litchard having known Peter before his enlistment some 56 years in the past. Litchard, it was noted, had lived in Northumberland/Lycoming County for 48 years and Peter had lived near him for 38 of those years (since 1794).

As part of his petition for a pension, Peter answered several other questions about himself:

He was born in Richmond Township, Berks County, PA, on 23 November, 1755.
He based his age on a record in the bible of his father's family, given to him when he had moved to the Lycoming area in 1794.
He indeed had lived in Richmond Township when he enlisted and later was drafted into service.
He was discharged in writing at Trenton, NJ by Colonel Haller; the paper had subsequently been taken by Sergeant Daniel Stout, presumably when Peter was drafted, and it was never returned nor replaced.
He offered as character witnesses Samuel Shoemaker, justice of the peace, and William Cox Ellis, attorney-at-law.

The Williamsport (PA) Lycoming Gazette of November 9, 1850, reported the death on November 3 in Moreland Township of Peter Sones, a "soldier of the revolutionary war", at the "advanced age of 97 years, 11 months and 10 days." While off by two years, the intent of the obituary was on the mark. He is buried at Moreland Cemetery, Lycoming County, PA.

Peter's son George Washington Sones at one time owned the entire Muncy Valley, PA. How did George Washington Sones originally come into the lands around present-day Sonestown? According to local history, the first settlers of that area were Timothy Crawley and Peter Anderson. They built a cabin and lived together until Crawley married. Benjamin Fiester then bought their property. John Whitacre actually owned the land on which Sonestown now sits which he sold to George W. Sones. Sonestown was founded in 1804. George subsequently sold a large part of his land holdings to his son John, Isaac's brother, who lived there until his death. John Sones made improvements on the land, which included the site of the village of Glen Sharon. His father George also built a sawmill near the present village of Sonestown about 1843.

Another brother of George Washington Sones, Daniel Sones, raised a family that, after his death in 1824, relocated to Center County, PA, and propagated in that area as told in the previsouly mentioned Settlers XVIII: The Sones, Simmons and Stevenson Families.

Peter's grandson, Isaac T. Sones, was born in 1821 in Lycoming County, PA, which at that time included the as-yet-not-formed Sullivan County; he died Feb. 3, 1871 in Otter Creek Township, Lucas County, IA. Isaac was another son of George Washington Sones, the founder of Sonestown, and Ann Lowe. On March 9, 1842, Isaac married Lucy "Matilda" Unger, born about 1825 in Columbia County, PA, daughter of John Unger and Mary Elizabeth Faust. She died while he was in the Civil War. Her tombstone, shown below in the Old Sonestown Cemetery, says she died at about age 40 in 1861. Isaac was serving with Company F of the 84th Regiment of Pennsylvania troops at that time. This date is almost certainly erroneous, since family records (see below) show that Matilda died in childbirth in 1864. Also, Isaac's Civil War pension application filed in 1889 by his second wife, Sarah E. (Bixby) Sylvara, indicates that Matilda died January 19, 1864. Isaac married Sarah, b. 04/02/1832 in Bainbridge, NY, in any case on October 10, 1864; she died on October 13, 1906 in Lucas County, IA. She was the daughter of Changler and Urania (Stackhouse) Bixby. Sarah was also the widow of John Silvara ("Sylvara") who drowned in the creek near Muncy, PA in 1864. Isaac and his wife Sarah are buried at Old Fletcher Cemetery, Lucas County, Iowa.

Grave of Civil War soldier, visited by Pennsylvania Descendant

By Carol Sones Shetler

With the influx to America, and many of those persons relocating to places within its borders, families were separated, some never to meet again. By changing the names, times and places, the following account could fit thousandsof families, perhaps even yours.

West of beautiful Ohio, the land of Lincoln and the Hoosier state, lies Iowa. That journey west in 1869 by my great-great-grandfather, was surely more difficult than the same trip I recently followed, 132 years later.

After learning the final resting place of Isaac Sones about two decades ago, the opportunity presented itself to visit his gravesite more than 1,000 miles away in Lucas County, Iowa. I wanted to visit the area from which the family branched out to after living for several generations in Pennsylvania.

Born in 1821 near the village of Clarkstown in Pennsylvania’s Lycoming County, Isaac was the youngest child of George and Ann Lowe Sones. When age 19, he moved with them to nearby Sullivan County, resulting in Sonestown bearing the family name.

When the Civil War began, Isaac was 40 years old, well past fighting age, yet despite a large and growing family, he joined the war effort, along with two sons.

Perhaps he felt an obligation to continue the family military tradition, as both grandfathers, Private Johan “Peter” Sones and Captain John Low ("Lowe"), had fought in the Revolutionary War.

Or he may have gone to protect, not only his own sons, but several nephews who also joined the conflict.

Unfortunately, he lost nephews John Ball, 18, who succumbed to smallpox and was buried at Arlington National Cemetery, and Peter Sones, the only son of his elder brother John, whose marker stands in Old Sonestown Cemetery.

Upon discharge, Isaac needed help to disembark from the train, and later tragedy struck when wife Matilda Unger died, followed soon after by their infant daughter, adding more graves to the family plot at Sonestown.

In time, Isaac married widow Sarah Bixby Sylvara, already the mother of two children, and moved to West Buffalo township, Union County, Pa. Born to the couple there were Rosa and Ira.

This was about the time a decision affecting destiny was made. Taking into consideration the available facts, circumstances at the time, and a bit of conjecture, the following is concluded:

Post war times were tough, the family was poor, and reports from relatives already in the west where land and opportunity seemed to abound, may have been an enticing sound. One of Isaac’s older sons, along with a Simmons nephew, planned to go west. Before leaving, Isaac took his son aside and pleaded that he also take two of the little brothers with them, and he was “overrun with children, resulting in too many mouths to feed.” The added responsibility of the boys would challenge the elder brother, who walked with crutches due to improper healing of broken legs. However, the wishes of the father were obliged, and the foursome were westward bound.

Soon the parents of the first wife died and their property in Columbia County was sold, with one of the executors being Isaac Sones. The inheritance may have become the means which enabled Isaac and part of his family to gather their belongings and go to Iowa.

Remaining forever in Pennsylvania were Isaac’s two eldest children, already married with families of their own. They were Edmund J. Sones of Derrs in Columbia County (my great-grandfather) and Elizabeth Sones, wife of Charles Ball in Lycoming County.

Eventually the pioneer part of the Sones family arrived in Otter Creek Township, Lucas County, Iowa, and made it their home. Either due to ill health, the stress of the trip, or both, Isaac died in February 1871 at age 50, less than two years after their arrival near Norwood. A few descendants of his family remain in and around Iowa’s Lucas County. A grandson, Donald Sones, died in 1999. Others had gone to Cherokee County, as well as to Nebraska, California, Oregon and beyond.

In Fletchers Cemetery, we found a tall narrow stone marking the grave of Isaac Sones. A GAR holder was flagless the day we visited in June. Eventually other family members were laid to rest in that rural cemetery off Highway 65 south of Des Moines. We spent an hour among rolling hills similar to those of the Keystone State. No houses were in sight. No noise penetrated the stillness. There was nothing but white clouds floating east in the sky overhead. Blooming in the unused side of the two acre burial grounds, the color of thousands of blue flowers matched my feelings as we drove away. The anticipation of finding my soldier forefather’s grave was replaced with sadness at leaving that place. There was satisfaction too, in this offspring of the children Isaac bade farewell to long ago in Pennsylvania, possibly the only one of them to have traveled to his Iowa gravesite, albeit 130 years after his death.

Why Isaac Sones went west may never be answered for me, but the words from an inscription found on a plaque on the grounds of the Lucas County courthouse in Chariton gave a glimmer of insight. It reads: “We cross the prairie as of old, the pilgrims crossed the sea. To make the West as they the East, the homestead of the free.”

Editor's Note: This was submitted by Carol Sones Shetler, 274 Shetler Road, Turbotbille, PA 17772. Shetler is a staff writer for The Luminary, a weekly newspaper in Muncy, a town near the birthplace of Isaac Sones, where many Sones descendants of other branches of the family reside. Carol also wrote that they were grateful for the kindness of people at the courthouse, museum and library in Chariton, that it seemed like a great town, laid out much differently than where she lives in central Pennsylvania.

*Note: Sullivan County was formed from Lycoming County in 1847. There is no reason to belive that these early Sones children were born in substantially different locations in this overlapping area.

The children of Isaac and Sarah were:

Rosa Caroline, b. 06/26/1865 in Union County, PA, d. 11/25/1881 in Lucas County, IA
Ira Watson, b. 10/10/1868 in Union County, d. 10/21/1937 in Lucas County, m. (1) Lucy E. Mills in 1877 (2) Mary (Pedigo) Gray

Sarah expended a substantial amount of energy trying to establish her eligibility for a widow's pension in light of Isaac Sones' Civil War service. In 2002, through the auspices of Melody Sones Spence, a Sones family researcher in Illinois, and her dialogue with Carol Brotzman, a Bradford County, PA historian, we obtained the following information:

Civil War record and pension for Sarah Bixby Sylvara Sones:

Isaac SONES enlisted on 09 October 1861 at Georgetown, PA and served as a teamster or wagoneer in Company F, 84th Regiment, Pennsylvania Infantry. He mustered in on 24 December 1861. In 1862, 1863, and 1864 he was sick in the hospital in Washington, DC or Baltimore, MD. Later, Isaac was courtmartialed for desertion but was acquitted on 11 April 1864, and discharged on 28 April 1864.

At enlistment he said he was born in Lycoming County PA, 39 years of age, 6 ft 1 1/2 inches tall, dark complexion, blue eyes, dark hair, and a farmer. His disability discharge states in April 1864 that he had been unfit for duty for 60 days in the last 2 months. A surgeon's report said he had hypertrophy of the heart with dilation, chronic ulcer on the left leg and some of these diseases existed prior to enlistment. He desires to be addressed at Georgetown, PA. This currently appears to be a town northwest of Pitsburgh, near the Ohio border. Perhaps this was a demobilization point for the military, or perhaps there was some locality by this name in Sullivan County, although it is unknown to the historians who contrubte to this site.)br>
In 1889, his 2nd wife Sarah, of Lacona, Warren County, Iowa, age 60, applied for a widow's pension. She has remained his widow. Children of her deceased husband who were under 16 years of age at his death: 1) Rosa C. Sones, born 26 June 1865 at Union County PA; 2) Ira W. Sones, born 10 October 1868 at Union County; and her husband had three children from his first marriage under 16 years old: Peter Sones, "Ellis" Sones, and "Isaacher" Sones, but she could not give exact ages and where born.

Edmond Bennett was a witness for her in October 1890. He stated that he was well acquainted with the late Isaac Sones and was raised in the same county and was with him when he married Sarah E. Sylvara. He also knew Matilda Sones, former wife of Isaac, and she died in Sullivan County in January 1864. In October 1890, Jane Chappell of Oakly, Lucas County, Iowa said that: She knew Sarah E. Sones and the said soldier well in his lifetime. I was present at their home at the birth of Rosa C. Sones on 26 June 1865 in Union County, PA and was present at the home of Sarah in Lucas County, Iowa when Rosa died on 25 November 1881. I was also present at the home of Isaac and Sarah within two days of when their son Ira W. Sones was born 10 October 1868.

Dr. H. Hayden of Lucas County stated in August 1891 that Isaac suffered from 1870 until his death from chronic diarrhea and consumption of the bowels. He was a very poor and thin man wasted from this disease. Harvey S. Wells of Williamsport, PA wrote on 18 August 1891 that Isaac Sones before the late war was a robust man, and worked on a farm and in the woods when he enlisted. When he was discharged, he was so bad that he could scarcely walk without assistance.

T. S. Simmons, age 51, of Sonestown, PA in March 1893 stated that he knew Isaac Sones and worked many a day with him. He took sick while a teamster with the wagon train and was sent to the hospital where he remained a long time. When he was discharged, I carried his knapsack to the train about 160 rods for he was not able to carry it. After discharge, I saw him often and also saw him in the summer of 1870 in Iowa where he was still suffering and a wreck.

Sarah was granted a widow's pension and was dropped from rolls at her death.

Now let us return to the main themes of this story. Isaac and Matilda's son, Joshuay Bougart Sones, was born Nov. 15, 1849 in Sonestown, Sullivan Co., PA., and died Aug. 31, 1945 in Long Beach, Los Angeles County, California. Joshuay's wife was: Mary C. Francis, born October 22, 1855 in Union County, PA., and died Dec. 15, 1927 in Long Beach. They were married Feb. 20, 1877 at Lewisburg, in Union County. PA. Her parents were Abraham and Fanny Francis After Joshuay moved West, he became a rancher, as listed on his death certificate. Also, after his first wife died, he then married Rosa B. Smith on May 1, 1932. At the times of their deaths, both Joshuay and Mary were members of the Seventh Day Adventist religion.

Joshuay was one of several siblings in the family of Isaac and Matilda (Unger) Sones. Here is a picture of Joshua as a young man in Pennsylvania and another taken in the 1890s in Long Beach of Joshuay with several of his brothers:

A family story, recounted in Georgene Sones' book, states that Joshuay Sones and Mary Francis were married in Lewisburg, PA in Union County in 1877. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Warren County, Iowa where they lived on a rented farm and where two of his brothers and one of his sisters lived. They then moved to Fullerton, Nance County. Nebraska in 1881 and lived there until 1884, when they moved to Cherry County NE. (Note: However, the family still appears on the 1885 Nance County, NE Federal census.) In Cherry County, they first lived in a dugout or "sod house", then in a log house for 25 years. Later a six-room cottage was built. During that time, they lost two children in infancy and were the first to start the cemetery at Center, NE.

The land acquired in Nebraska was eventually expanded under the Kinkaid Act of 1904. What was the Kinkaid Act?

The Kinkaid Act of 1904, authored by Nebraska Congressman Moses P. Kinkaid, was a special homestead law which applied only to the western and central portions of Nebraska (primarily the Sand Hills). This act allowed 640 acre homesteads in the designated areas, except for lands set aside as being suitable for irrigation. The act was an effort to respond to the fact that 160 acre tracts were far too small for productive agriculture and ranching in the relatively arid Sand Hills and high plains regions of Nebraska.

Filing a Kinkaid entry--
The essential age and citizenship requirements were the same as for the Homestead Act. Under the Kinkaid Act, persons not already having exercised their homestead privilege could enter an entire 640 acre claim. Those previously having a homestead entry were permitted to claim additional land not to exceed a total of 640 acres. Final proof on lands under the Kinkaid act could not be consummated until at least five years after the entry, regardless of the status of a former or existing homestead entry. Military service credit could be used to reduce the residency requirements, but Kinkaid homesteads could not be commuted for cash.

Kinkaid Proofs--
Since the Kinkaid act was an amended version of the Homestead Act, legal requirements for making final proof were the same.

Kathleen Sones is the great-aunt of our contributor Teresa Porter's husband, Ronald Dale Porter. Per an e-mail message to Teresa in the Fall of 2001, Kathleen quoted from the Gordon, Nebraska Centennial Book (page 428):

Joshua lived in a sod house for a while, then in a dugout on his preemptiom, which the family occupied for sixteen months, at the end of which time he erected a good log house, later building a large eight room house thirteen miles south of Merriman. The family also owned a neat cottage in Gordon, where the children went to school in 1905.

Kathleen reports that the eight-room house was later sold to Horace Gardner, her grandfather. She grew up in that house. Joshuay eventually acquired rights to 1100 acres, which he later sold and moved to Long Beach, California in 1918. Here is a picture of the family outside their log house in Nebraska. The second picture shows the family of Joshuay and Mary in Long Beach about 1918.

Here is another somewhat earlier picture of Elsie Sones and husband on her wedding day; she married Amos Porter on May 6, 1914 in Rushville, Sheridan County, Nebraska.

Edmund Jefferson Sones was the first born son of Isaac T. Sones and Matilda Unger, and the brother of Joshuay Bougart Sones. Edmund was born July 1, 1842 in what was then Lycoming County, PA, and died of stomach cancer on June 16, 1912 in Columbia County PA.. at the age of 69 years. He married Mary Jane Wilson, who was born March 19, 1837 in PA, and died Sept. 12, 1916 in Columbia Co. PA. She was previously married to John Gower, with whom she had two surviving children, Robert and Rosette. We are unaware of what happened to John Gower. Both Edmund and Mary Jane are buried in Jackson Township Cemetery, in Columbia County. You can learn more about the Wilson family at The Descendants of Isaac Wilson and Sarah Snyder.

The information about the family of Edmund Jeffeson Sones comes from the Sones family history written by Georgene Sones. Here is a picture of this family from the early 1880s:

The following information on the descendants of Edmund and Mary was originally offered by Teresa Porter. In January 2007, Joyce Ingerson, a well known family history consultant for the LDS, provided a comprehensive update. In June 2008, Teresa offered additional information on these Sones ancestors. The original text below is shown in maroon. The updates from Joyce and Teresa are provided in crimson and green, respectively. We are grateful to them for this additional information.

The seven children of Edmund and Mary were:

Sarah Jane 'Jennie' Sones, born 02/21/1865, died 04/03/1949, m. Samuel Knouse
Hiram Steven Sones, born 03/12/1867, died 05/21/1892
Jacob E. Sones, born 08/19/1869, died 03/20/1936, m. Della C. Kline (1869-1959)
Jonathan W. Sones, born 04/06/1872, died 06/20/1951, married Rebecca Hill (1876-1940) both buried at Kay Cemetery, Madison Township, Columbia County, PA
Elizabeth A. Sones, born 01/22/1875, died 06/27/1920, m. 12/22/1891 to John Ball
Theodore Clinton Sones, born 10/08/1877, died 03/04/1926, m. Cora B______ (b. 1879)
George Washington Sones (named after his grandfather), born 02/22/1880, died 04/14/1949, m. 08/16/1904 to Della M. Howard (1881-1956)

We do not at this time know for sure which children are in the picture. It appears some are missing. The sources only list two daughters, but there seem to be three in the picture! Perhaps one of Mary Jane's children by her first marriage are in the picture. We hope that someone will see this picture and be able to clarify the identities.

Photo Identifications:
Indeed,
Rosetta Wilson, b 18 Aug 1857, d 23 Dec 1927, spouse of Joseph Redline * & James L Bason

She is eldest daughter standing, about 12/ 13 years of age (1871/ 1872)
* Editor's Note: Some additional information about the Redline ancestry can be found at Judith R. Coopey's Descendants of Johann Jacob Rathlein. "Redline" is an anglicization of Rathlein from the German original. Joseph, husband of Rosetta, was the son of Joseph Samuel and Susannah (Watts) Redline. Joseph Samuel was a lumberman in Columbia County, PA. His son Joseph (1848-1905) inherited the taste for "wood" and became a carpenter as well as a local farmer. Joseph Samuel Redline, the father. also constructed two local covered bridges in Columbia County that are still standing: the Josiah Hess Bridge, built in 1875, and the Sam Eckman Bridge, built in 1876. Per Barbara Hewitt, father and son also held several US patents:

* J. Redline, Jr., Saw Mill Dog, No. 290, 355, Patented Dec 18, 1883
* J. S. Redline., Water Gate for mills, canals, &c., No. 306, 176, Patented Oct 7, 1884; Pivot Scale, No. 334, 051, Patented Jan 12, 1886; Cover for Wells or Cisterns, No. 376, 010, Patented Jan 3, 1888

D: March 5, 1927, in Greenwood Township, Columbia, PA is about age 7-8 standing to right

Sarah Jennie Sones, daughter, abt age 5 in dotted dress

Hiram S Sones, son, age 3, sitting on lap of Edmond Sones

Jacob is youngest child, sitting on lap of Mary J Wilson Sones. Confusing since he is wearing a dotted dress. Not unusual for

the era to have younger children: female or male in dresses. (Easier to change diapers).

Photo has to be taken about 1871/ maybe 1872.

Regimental History
PENNSYLVANIA
ONE HUNDRED and FORTY-FIRST INFANTRY
(Three Years)
One Hundred and Forty-first Infantry. - Col., Henry J. Madill; Lieut.-Cols., Guy H. Watkins, Casper W. Tyler, Joseph H. Horton ; Majs., Israel P. Spaulding, Casper W. Tyler, Joseph H. Horton, Charles Mercur. This regiment was composed of recruits from the counties of Bradford Susquehanna and Wayne, and ren-
dezvoused at Camp Curtin, Harrisburg where it was mustered into the U. S. service in the latter part of Aug. 1862, for three years. It was barely organized, when it was hurried to Washington, arriving on Aug. 30 during the progress of the second battle of Bull Run. It was a raw, inexperienced regiment and the privations and exposure of the first few weeks told heavily on the health of the men, 300 being in hospital at one time and
500 being reported unfit for duty. It was assigned to the 1st brigade (Gen. Robinson), Birney's division, 3d corps. It remained at Washington, engaged in perfecting itself in drill and discipline, until the close of the Maryland campaign, and was then posted at Poolesville for a time, engaged in picket duty. It went into winter quarters at Falmouth on Nov. 25, and was in reserve during most of the battle of Fredericksburg, losing but
1 killed and 4 wounded.

HISTORY OF THE BENJAMIN SAYMAN FAMILY

This history was compiled by Rosa (Silverstrim) Sayman. Rose was the daughter of Magnus Silverstrim and the wife of Frederick Victor Sayman, son of Benjamin Sayman II and Elizabeth Sarah Shaffer. Elizabeth was the daughter of Jonathan and Catherine (Stahl) Shaffer. Linda Ryan Crawford, our contributor and also the great-great-great grand-daughter of Benjamin Sayman I, has added to it and corrected some things, and continues to do so. Her e-mail address is ringdale@hotmail.com. The first part of the Sayman History deals with Benjamin Sayman II's first marriage line. You can learn more about the second marriage line at The Descendants of Benjamin Sayman II and Elizabeth Shaffer.

Benjamin Jonathan (Lewis) Sayman I was born in 1814 in Berks County, PA and died in 1850. The name was originally spelled "Saeman". This Benjamin was the son of Ludwig Saeman, born in 1862, and Justina Schaeffer. Ludwig Saeman was the son of Johann Ludwig Sayman (12/16/1722-12/12/1797) and Anna Maria "Magdalena" Geschwindt (1728-1798). This couple arrived in Philadelphia on October 25, 1948 on the Patience and Margaret, a ship out of Rotterdam under the command of Captain John govan.

Benjamin I married Kate Epler of Berks County, PA. To them were born two children, Benjamin Sayman II and Kate Sayman. Kate Epler Sayman and Kate Sayman died and are buried in Berks County.

After their death, Benjamin I moved to Sullivan County in 1849 and settled in Forks Twp., PA. There he met and married Betsy Hosler. They had one son, Manessa Sayman. They lived on the farm where Manessa Sayman was born and also lived. Benjamin I died in 1850 and is buried on that farm. After Benjamin Sayman I died, his widow married Henry Neville. They subsequently lived on the Manessa Sayman farm until their death. Manessa Sayman was the half-brother of Benjamin II.

Benjamin Sayman II was born on April 3, 1830 in Berks County, Hamburg, PA. He made his homestead on a farm next to his father’s land in Forks Twp. Sullivan Co, PA.

He died on June 19, 1914 and is buried in Peace Cemetery, Cherry, PA. Here is a picture of the house he and his family lived in. There are other pictures of the farmstead at the end of this section.

After the death of Benjamin II, his widow, Elizabeth Shaffer Sayman, married George Rinebold, also of Forks Twp., who was ;previously married to Ruth Bird. George was the son of Addison Rinebold and Lavina Goughler. He was also the brother of Eli Rinebold who married Adeline Sayman, daughter of Benjamin Sayman II and Sarah Hartzig (and therefore a step-daughter of Elizabeth Shaffer). Both George and Eli were grandsons of Johannes {"John") and Lydia (Miller) Reinbold, per Janet Rinebold Webster. Janet is a descendant of Addison and Lavinia (Goughler) Rinebold. Elizabeth Shaffer Sayman lived on the Rinebold farm until her death in 1929.

Here is a picture of the children of John and Mary (McIntire) Hunsinger taken with their Uncle Charles Karge and two of the Karge children, their first cousins. The picture identities were confirmed to Charlotte Jenney Tappan, the contributor of this picture, by Dorothy Marie (Hunsinger) Chamberlain on February 12, 2002. "Marie", as she was called, noted that she herself has a large brown birthmark on her left arm, conspicuous in the photo. An old wive's tale passed down in the family alleged that, when her mother was carrying Marie, their dog got hit by a car. Her mother was doing dishes and she took the soap off of her arm with her right hand and that's how it happened that the baby was marked!

Originally posted as "Elsie Sarah Jacoby". A note from Dick Hunsinger on January 27, 2002 goes as follows: On the Sayman History, you list Elsie Sarah Jacoby married to Henry Vogle. A descendant says her name was Elsie Mae, not Elsie Sarah. In checking the 1900 census for Cherry, I find her listed as a child of John C. Jacoby, named "Elsie M." Additional support for middle name being Mae is that her own 4th child's name was Elsie Mae (married to James Lima).

HANNAH HARTZIG (JOHN, JOHN) born in 1840, married Peter Rohe. There was an article in the February 22, 1933 issue of the Sullivan Review (Dushore, Sullivan County, PA) describing the 92-year old Mrs. Rohe and her life in 19th century Sullivan county:

Pioneer Woman Tells of Life in Sullivan County
Mrs. Hannah Rohe, 92, Still Living in Forks Township; Remembers One Year When Father Shot 93 Deer; Tells Panther Story of Early Days

A member of a pioneer family in Sullivan county, who can remember her father shooting 93 deer in one year along the Black Creek in Forks Township, is still living in that township at the age of 92. She is Mrs. Hannah Rohe and many are the stories she can tell of pioneer days in that section.
The only weapon her father used to shoot the deer was a single-barreled muzzle-loading shotgun. He built a platform in the trees near a deer-lick along the creek and shot the deer as they came along. He sold the saddles, or hind-quarters, to a Philadelphia butcher. Mrs. Rohe was born in a log cabin in Cherry Township, and well remembers how the wild animals howled at night time in the vicinity of her home. Venison was the chief meat supply at the table in those early days.
Mrs. Rohe tells a panther story that well illustrats the dangers of the pioneer days. Late one evening two boys went to get the cows into the barn for the night and as they went along they saw what they thought were fireflies and ran to catch them, but to their horror they found the flashing lights were the eyes of a panther which gave chase to them. They ran home and told their uncle who snatched up the gun and shot at the panther, wounding it. Taking up the trail of the animal the next morning, he founds its dead body near Laddsburg, PA.
Mr. and Mrs. John Hartzig, the parents of Mrs. Rohe, were born in Baden, Germany. She was born in 1840 and on June 16, 1863 she was married by a justice of the peace to Peter Rohe.
The marriage certificate was made out on a common sheet of writing paper, the seal being affixed with pen and ink.
Ten children, of whom three are still living, were born to them. Those living are Louise, Charles and Clara. Mr. Rohe died in 1925.....
[missing text]....R.D. 3, Dushore. She has 18 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren. Her brother, John Hartzig, who has reached the age of 96. is still living. He makes his home with his son, George Hartzig, of Cherry Mills, PA.

Here is the actual obituary for John Hartzig:

    The Sullivan Review
    May 24, 1933

John S. Hartzig died Tuesday morning, May 23rd at the home of his son, George Hartzig at Cherry Mills. Mr. Hartzig was a life-long resident of Cherry Township. He was born May 6, 1838, died May 23rd, having reached the age of 95 years and 17 days.

He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Lewis W. Yonkin of Allentown, Mrs. William Shaffer of this place; one son, George Hartzig of Cherry Mills; also eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and four great great grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Hannah Rohe of Overton.

Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at the Reformed Church at 10’oclock. Interment in Bahr Hill cemetery.

    5. SALLY "SARAH" HARTZIG (WILLIAM, JOHN) was born about 1834. She married BENJAMIN JONATHAN SAYMAN II about 1858, great-grandson of LUDWIG SAYMAN and JUSTINE SCHAEFFER ("SHAFFER") and son of BENJAMIN SAYMAN I. He was born April 30, 1830 in Berks County, PA, and died June 19, 1914.

In the 1879 Census of Forks Twp., Sullivan Co. , Page 54B, Line 9, House 26, Family 26, she is shown as Sally, age 35, married, and living with husband and children.

Notes for BENJAMIN JONATHAN SAYMAN II:

Original spelling of name was Saeman. He was son of Benjamin Jonathan (Lewis) Saeman I, who was the grandson of Johann Ludwig Sayman (12-16-1722 / 12-12-1797), who arrived in Philadelphia on Oct. 25, 1748 on the ship Patience & Margaret from Rotterdam, Capt. John Govan. (Source: Mary Sayman)

The Sullivan County Genealogical Project is indebted to Mel Lader for this historical portrait of these families. Please contact Mel Lader for additional information, corrections, or additions at lader@gwu.edu. Here is Mel's preamble:

Like so many other descendants of Sullivan County families, my ancestry includes several names of the early settlers, especially Meyer (Meier, Moyer), Schaeffer, Dieffenbach (Dieffenbacher), and Thrasher (Drescher). Since the early generations of both the Dieffenbach and Thrasher families are well documented in several places elsewhere on this site, I will not repeat that information here. Moreover, the information is also available in my full family history file that can be found within the World Connect project at Rootsweb and Ancestry.com.

For this segment, I begin with my Meyer ancestors, who arrived in Cherry Township from Lehigh County sometime between 1843 and 1850. This was Jacob Meyer and his wife Salome Koch Meyer, and some of their children. Both the Meyer and Koch families were early German immigrants to Philadelphia, who had settled in the Lehigh Valley in the 18th century. Among the Meyer children who came to Sullivan County at the same time as their parents was their second child, Maria, and her husband Isaac Schaeffer, and their son, John Henry Schaeffer. The Schaeffer family, too, was well rooted in Lehigh County. We begin with the Lehigh County ancestor, Jacob Meyer, also spelled "Meier" in some places including his grave stone, shown above.

    The HIEBER Family

We are very grateful to Sherri Hieber-Day of New Jersey for the following information about the Hieber family. Sherri is the granddaughter of Oscar Hieber, and she and her brother Craig Hieber are the children of Oscar Bernard Hieber, who was 80 years old in 2001. Sherri can be reached for conversation on the Hieber ancestry at Sherri.Hieber-Day@pearsonlearning.com.

The following biographical excerpt appears in Thomas Ingham's 1899 History of Sullivan County:

EMANUEL G. HIEBER, a pioneer farmer of Cherry township, who has witnessed much of the development of Sullivan county and has borne an active part in converting the virgin soil to productive farms, has inherited from his sturdy German ancestors their habits of thrift and industry, which go far in making a man successful in any calling in life. John and Margaret (Steiner) Hieber were natives of Wurtemberg, Germany, who came to America at an early day and were married in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1828. They made that city their home until 1832, when they removed to Sullivan county, settling in Cherry township, which was then almost a wilderness. They cleared up their land, bringing it under a good state of cultivation, subsequently selling their first property and purchasing another piece of wild land, which they improved and on which they made their home the remainder of their lives. For some ten years, they lived in log cabins, the last of which was replaced by a comfortable and commodious house. Mr. Hieber was a man of considerable prominence, serving three terms as supervisor and the same length of time as school director. He was a member of the Lutheran church and a Democrat in his political belief. His death took place in October, 1863, at the age of fifty-eight years, his wife surviving him until August 27, 1878, when she died at the good old age of eighty-four years. Their remains are interred in Thrasher's cemetery, Cherry township. The following children were born to this worthy couple: Emanuel G.; John, who died in infancy; John (second), who married Mary Rettberg and lives in Cherry township; Lena, who married Harry Ring and lives in Bradford county, Pennsylvania; H. Esther, who became the wife of D. Goodwin Persun, a blacksmith, at Picture Rocks, Pennsylvania; Benjamin (deceased), who was struck by lightning June 13, 1895; he had married Rachel Thrasher of Cherry township.

The paternal grandparents of our subject were John and Mary (Magdalena) Hieber, of Wurtemberg, Germany, who had five children--John, Daniel, Christian and two daughters. The maternal grandparents were John and Margaret (Stoltz) Steiner, natives of Germany and Switzerland respectively, who came to America during the war of Napoleon, and first settled in Carbon county, Pennsylvania. In 1837, they removed to Sullivan county, where they spent the remainder of their lives. Their children were as follows: Emma, who died in Germany; John, who married Miss Stewart; Catherine, who became the wife of Baldwin Millheim; Elizabeth, now Mrs. Von Buchwalts; Mollie, who became the wife of Phillip Klunt; Margaret, who married John Hieber; Susanna, who married Mr. Chiller; Lena, who married John Bartch; Savilla, who became Mrs. Arth; Jacob, who married Kate Gerhart; and Barnett, who married Sarah Shaffer. Of these, Elizabeth is the only survivor.

Emanuel G. Hieber was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, August 23, 1830, and lived at home until twenty-nine years of age, when he purchased a portion of his present farm, comprising seventy acres, from John Stackhouse. This was at the time wild land, which he at once set to work to improve, and which became so profitable that he was able to add to it at various times until he now is the owner of one hundred and ninety-three acres of valuable land. He has worked hard, has accumulated a comfortable share of this world's goods, and in his present commodious home is enjoying the fruits of his labor. He has been roadmaster for a good part of the past twenty years, and was a school director for two terms. He is a Democrat in politics, a member of the Lutheran church, and a man who is well thought of and highly respected in his community.

Mr. Hieber has been twice married. His first wife was Elizabeth Nuper, a daughter of George and Elizabeth Nuper, to whom he was united December 23, 1859, and who died in the brief space of one year, aged twenty-three years. His second marriage was to Miss Maria Houser, and of this union the following children were born: John, who married Miss Katie Messersmith, and lives in Bradford county; George, who is unmarried and resides with his parents; Carrie, who is the wife of G. Robinson, and lives in Bradford county; William, who is unmarried and is a farmer; Frank D., Emma, Lena, Milton, Jacob, Ida, Oscar, Lulu, Ollie; Elizabeth, who married Jacob Schrenn, of Bradford county, Pennsylvania; and Mary, living with her sister in Towanda, Pennsylvania.

Here are pictures of a year-end school card issued by the Bachman School in Cherry Township for the 1996-1997 school year. Aside from its historical interest as an artifact, the card brings together in the same classroom two branches of the Hieber family. You will note that four of the students in attendance (Jacob, Milton, Oscar and Oliver) were children of Emanuel G. Hieber; while Phoebe Hieber, another student, and Addie L. Hieber, her sister and the classroom teacher, were children of Benjamin Hieber, the brother of Emanuel. Addie's picture is shown on the cover of the card. Notice the other surnames in attendance, reflecting the presence of other great old families in the Sullivan County historical panorama.
