Message from Bob Parmerter, August 7, 2003:
Arch Cook was born in Halbeath, Fife, Scotland on January 19, 1861. His father was John Cook, a coal miner from Fife, Scotland and mother was Margaret Johnston. The family came to the Sullivan County area of Pennsylvania in 1868 when he was seven. All his early education was in Sullivan County. His family moved to Moingona, Boone County, Iowa in 1875, where several other siblings were born. He married Violet Florence Hartman in Moingona, 19 November 1880. His next younger brother, Tom, married her younger sister Eliza Eleanor Hartman there on December 18, 1886. A little while later, the two brothers were commissioned by the great Northern Railroad to go further west prospecting for coal. They found coal deposits near the Douglas, Wyoming area. Shortly after their return to Moingona, both families, along with sisters married to Browns and Peacocks, started a wagon train to Douglas, Wyoming and lived there most of the rest of their lives. Arch died there on 23 April 1942. He came to Clifton Springs, New York for the funeral of Mary Belle Brown Walters in March of 1940. The above photo was taken there by my mother, Ethel Parmerter, the day of the funeral. This is the only time I ever saw Uncle Arch.
